Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369940 AB In 1993, a second survey was conducted in Ruili City and other two counties in Yunnan Province, where a cohort study field had been established in 1992. 755 drug users including both HIV+ and HIV-, 102 spouses of HIV infected IDUs were interviewed. 9 samples of 54 IDUs in the cohort study tested were seroconverters. The seroconversion rates (incidence rate) in IDUs (per hundred person year) in Ruili, Longchuan, and Luxi were 40, 12.2 and 0 respectively in 1993. The rates in the same area in 1992 were 43.2, 12.2 and 0. Among 108 subjects newly recruited IDUs, 38 were tested HIV positive. The seroprevalence rates in these three counties were 85.7%, 40.0% and 0 in 1993, in comparison to 81.8%, 44.6% and 5.1% in 1992. The coordination was observed in the levels between seroconversion and seroprevalence. An increasing of seroprevalence among the spouses of HIV infected IDUs was also found: which was 3.1% in 1990; 9.8% in 1992 and 7.4% in 1993. More attention should be paid to Luxi county where the ratio of IV drug use increased rapidly among drug users, although fewer HIV positive subjects was found among the recent starter of IDUs.
