Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369930 AB OBJECTIVE: Currently in Japan, patients of mother-to-child transmission of HIV are very few, but we are concerned at the increase of HIV infected children, because HIV antibody positive women are increasing. This report is based on the dental treatment to a patient of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and the oral manifestation that we observed. CASE: The patient is a boy. He was born on July 2, 1991, weight of birth was 3115 g. From about two months after his birth he had a continuous cough, and he was admitted to hospital for pneumonia on Oct. 8, 1991. Due to continuing fever and abnormal shadow on chest X-rays, he was referred to the Dept. of Infectious disease at Kanagawa Children's Medical Center on Nov. 11, 1991, where he was tested to PA, Western blot and PCR, whereupon he was diagnosed as being HIV infected. Family history; Father is HIV antibody negative. Mother is HIV antibody positive. The first dental examination was on Sept. 22, 1993 (the patient was 2 years and 2 months), being referred to the Dept. of Dentistry by his physical doctor due to multiple tooth caries. The following teeth had erupted [TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.] All teeth had caries and enamel hypoplasia. He had ulcers on the soft palate and erythematous candidiasis on dorsum of tongue. He was very fearful of dental treatment, so we treated his dental caries under general anesthesia. Since then we have checked for oral cavity periodically.
