Document 2649 DOCN M94A2649 TI Paediatric HIV diagnosis in the Malaysian context. DT 9412 AU Sinniah M; Institute for Medical Research, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):256 (abstract no. PB0454). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369926 AB OBJECTIVE: To evaluate diagnostic approaches for paediatric HIV laboratory diagnosis in order to adopt the most suitable for use in the Malaysian setting. MATERIALS & METHODS: Sera from babies suspected to be HIV infected or born to HIV positive mothers were tested using Anti HIV 1 & 2 Elisa, HIV-Antigen Elisa and PCR. Follow up sera were tested where available. RESULTS: All the 17 babies in our study had HIV Antibodies. Diagnosis was established in most cases by persisting antibody levels at follow-up; by PCR when that became available locally, and by a positive HIV-Ag assay in only some of the cases. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION: A combination of tests seems suitable in the Malaysian context, due to the technical difficulties inherent in these assays, as well as due to sociocultural factors leading to defaulted follow-up.
