SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):253 (abstract no. PB0442). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369912 AB OBJECTIVE--To study changes of arteriopathy in small and medium sized arteries and other associated lesions in children with AIDS. METHODS--Autopsy study of children with AIDS was carried out. Histology was studied by H & E and special stains. The pathognomonic features of arteriopathy were specifically looked for along with a note of other AIDS associated lesions. RESULTS--Three out of four children showed histomorphological features characteristic of arteriopathy which consisted of fibrosis of intima and media with luminal narrowing and fragmentation of internal elastic lamina. Calcification was not noted in any of our cases. The arterial lesions were seen in lung, heart, kidney, liver, spleen, lymphnodes and thymus. Other noted lesions were pulmonary lymphoid hyperplasia, disseminated cytomegalovirus and candidial infections. CONCLUSION--Arteriopathy is a distinct entity and the pathogenesis of it is believed to be exposure to endogenous and exogenous elastases due to repeated opportunistic and bacterial infections. High degree of suspicion is required to diagnose these lesions antemortem.
