Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369906 AB OBJECTIVE: The study was conducted to assess the quality assurance programme for HIV antibody testing in Blood Transfusion Centres (BTC) in Delhi. METHODOLOGY: Implementation of quality assurance programme in various aspects of HIV screening i.e. standardised sample collection and transportation, recommended technical procedure, use of standard operating procedure, documentation and reporting, handling of positive donations, staff training and equipment and reagent control was evaluated in 11 BTCs in Delhi, screening 0.12 million (approx.) blood units annually for transfusion safety. A pretested, designed and closed type of questionnaire was used for evaluation, with the help of a weighted scoring system. RESULTS: Quality assurance in HIV screening done in 11 BTCs was graded using a scoring pattern with a maximum score of 100. One BTC scored 75 (excellent) and 4 were in the range of 50-74 (satisfactory). Performance of remaining BTCs was unsatisfactory. A detailed analysis of various parameters will be presented. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS: The importance of quality assurance in HIV screening cannot be overemphasised. The evaluation of HIV screening in different BTCs suggests a strong need for implementation of effective quality assurance programme for an accurate and reproducible testing system.
