Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369661 AB OBJECTIVE: The detection of CSF antibody against the V3 loop of HIVMN by peptide ELISA has been recently reported in a high percentage of patients (LUCEY DR et al., J. AIDS 1993, 6:994-1001). We re-evaluated the occurence of intrathecal synthesis (ITS) of antibodies to the V3 loop of HIVMN. METHODS: We measured the antibodies to the HIV gp120 V3 loop (strain MN) in the cerebrospinal fluid and serum of 47 HIV infected patients by peptide-ELISA. RESULTS: Antibodies to V3 were detected in the serum of 94% and in the CSF of 78% of the patients. ITS of the antibodies took place in only 30% of the patients and in low levels (mean ratio of serum/CSF titers equal to 215). All patients presented intrathecal synthesis of antibodies to gp 120 by Western blot. CONCLUSION: Despite the ITS of antibodies to gp 120 in HIV infection, the antibody response to the V3 loop is of much lower level and thus constititute a basis for the defective immunoregulation of the virus in the nervous system.
