Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369602 AB OBJECTIVE: to investigate perspectives of control of oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) of HIV-seropositive patients. METHODS: 10 HIV-seropositive individuals were submitted to trichloroacetic acid (TCA) 40% and 10 other (HIV-seropositive) to glycolic acid (GA) 30%, topically. RESULTS: all patients reported good results if using TCA or GA regularly (2 to 3 times a week for TCA, 1 to 2 times a day for GA). All patients referred recurrence of OHL if treatment is interrupted. No significant discomfort was related in both cases. TCA seemed to be more quickly effective (24-48 hours after topical use), in spite of its relatively non-aesthetics aspect in the first 12-24 hours after administration (see figure); GA was apparently effective after 10 to 21 days of regular treatment. CONCLUSIONS: TCA and/or GA, both effective products used against some cutaneous viral and non-viral diseases (papillomavirus, molluscum contagiosum and queratotic disorders of the skin), can be used easily, without significant discomfort and relatively good results, during the time of persistence of OHL (see figures).
