WinZip(R) version 5.5a for Windows/NT Copyright (C) 1991-1994 Nico Mak Computing, Inc. All Rights Reserved PRE-RELEASE BETA VERSION Welcome to the pre-release version of WinZip 5.5a for Windows/NT! With a few exceptions this version is functionally equivalent to the 16 bit version, but because it is a native Win32 application it does not run into the incompatibilities in Windows/NT's Windows emulation, multi-tasks better, and is faster than the 16 bit version (in particular unzip operations are noticeably faster). PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THIS FILE FOR IMPORTANT INFORMATION If you encounter any problems using this pre-release software please contact the author at one of the addresses below. In particular, please report any problems with the new UNC support and the new long filename support. *** Quick Upgrade Instructions For Existing Users *** Please backup your WinZip directory, then follow the standard installation instructions below. See the file WHATSNEW.TXT for a list of recent changes. *** Standard Installation *** If you received this version of WinZip in an archive, first extract the files to a blank floppy. Activate the Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu, type A:SETUP, and press the Enter key. *** Requirements *** This program requires Windows/NT 3.5 or later. Some optional features require external programs. See the documentation for details. *** Documentation *** For full documentation, including context sensitive help, press the F1 key at any time while running WinZip. *** The following features are not supported in this pre-release *** * The "Uninstall" portion of the "Install/Uninstall" feature * The File Manager Extension *** Notes *** * Since the Win16 and the Win32 versions look almost identical an asterisk is displayed in the title bar of the Win32 version to make it easier to determine which version is running. * The best way to add files with long names to ZIP files is with the drag and drop interface. The Add dialog box has a few limitations, discussed below. * The current versions of all optional external archivers used by WinZip are DOS programs and do not support long filenames. Therefore, WinZip will pass the the short 8.3 version of all long file and directory names to these external programs. Since normal 8.3 names are usually more meaningful than the shortened versions of long filenames, it is recommended you use standard 8.3 filenames when working with external archivers. * Long Name Caution: DOS and 16-bit Windows programs usually have trouble with long filenames and files with spaces in the name. Therefore, it is recommended that you do not use long filenames and files with spaces in the name if you plan to work with these files from DOS. For example, PKUNZIP 2.04g will extract the file "A Long Filename" as "A LONG F", ignoring the extra characters. To avoid this problem check the "Store Filenames in 8.3 Format" checkbox in the Drop and Add dialog boxes when adding files. * This version of WinZip has not been extensively tested under the Win32s subset. *** Known Problems *** * There are some anomalies in how the Add dialog box handles long filenames and files with blanks. Note that the Add dialog box is based on the standard Windows "multi-select" open dialog box, so this behavior is common to _all_ applications that use this common dialog box. The dialog box shows the short form of long NTFS filenames with blanks, but does not list 8.3 files with blanks (e.g. the filename "nico mak computing.txt" is listed as "nicoma~1.txt" while the filename "nico mak.txt" is not shown at all). HPFS filenames with blanks are never shown. * Some of the 16-bit Windows virus scanners listed in the Program Location dialog box do not work or are not available under Windows/NT. * When long filenames don't fit in dialog box fields they should be abbreviated (and some dialog fields should be enlarged). * In a few situations (e.g. CheckOut) WinZip will use the short 8.3 format name of a directory instead of the long name even when it doesn't have to. This is due to the implementation of the Visual C++ getcwd() run-time library function, and will hopefully be corrected in the next version of the compiler. If not, I will code around the problem. *** List Of Files *** The WinZip 5.5a for Windows/NT package consists of the following files: README.TXT introductory information WINZIP.TXT product overview * WINZIP.HLP complete documentation in windows help format * WINZIPNT.EXE required executable * WZWIN32S.EXE required executable for Win32 environment * WZ.COM required executable * WZ.PIF required Program Information File LICENSE.TXT license agreement/warranty disclaimer ORDER.TXT order form VENDOR.TXT information for Shareware Distributors WHATSNEW.TXT list of changes in this version FILE_ID.DIZ brief description for bulletin boards * Files marked with an asterisk are distributed with a trailing underscore at the end of the filename.
