NOTFIX13.EXE Version 1.3, 20 Aug 1994 Copyright (c) Aug 1994, Jack J. Chandler Update: Version 1.3 corrects a problem in earlier versions that could possibly cause loss of some notes if the end of a note line occurred at the intersection of two note records in the notepad. Some PAF utility programs do not properly initialize the PAF Data records that they modify or write data to. PAF as a rule clears all previous data from a new record and fills that record with nul characters. This stucture is expected by many utility programs when they access the PAF data. PAFs FRCHK.EXE program will NOT report an error if the last several unused bytes of a record contain extraneous characters as long as the required END OF RECORD bytes are there. Some Utility programs though expect to find these trailing fill nuls characters and do not work properly without them. As an example, the program PAFCTOOL does NOT clear the record before writing to it. Any unused bytes in a NOTE2.DAT record will contain whatever extraneous characters were previously in those bytes of that record. This data does not have any detrimental effect on entering notes from within the Family Records program of PAF. Nor does it effect the entry of notes with the program IMPORT. Both of these will add their notes in the proper place and properly terminate a record with the required trailing nuls to the end of the record. NOTCLEAN does not modify any note records themselves and therefore will NOT remove these extraneous characters. NOTCLEAN copies each NOTES2.DAT record as it is found into its new location, taking along the extraneous characters with it. I recommend the use of NOTFIX10.EXE on any database that has had the NOTE2.DAT file modified or rebuilt by any utility program that may have effected the proper format of that file and its records. This should be done prior to attempting to use those files with programs such as GENBOOK or other programs that have problems when accessing the PAF NOTES2.DAT file. Keep in mind that the problem lies not with the programs having the problem reading the data, but with the previous program that modified the data. This program, NOTFIX10.EXE will remove ALL extraneous characters from the end of any NOTE2.DAT record and replace them with nul characters. There is no fee, registeration, or donation requested for the program NOTFIX10.EXE. It may be freely distributed but this text file and copyright notice must accompany the program.
