  Phillimores Hampshire Parish Records Volume 7.

  A more complete README file is included in Hantprv1.zip, 
  this one deals mainly with notes arising from vol.7.

  The files have been compiled in dosshell to ensure they
  are compatable with most computers. The files have been
  split to ensure that all of them will be within the
  limited memory capacity of dosshell.
  They can also be opened as text files in any Dos or 
  Window based word processor although this may alter the 
  column alignment of some files on the monitor.

  As with the previous volumes I have indexed the list of
  marriages has been split into two files, Marr7_A.txt and
  Marr7_B.txt.  With this volume the size of the entries for
  the parish of ELING has meant this parish is spread over
  the two files.  Marr7_A.txt has the ELING entries from
  1539 to 1770.  Marr7_B.txt has the ELING entries from 1771
  to 1811, and the entries for SOPLEY, WESTMEON and SILCHESTER.
  Some of the entries in the volume for ELING are out of
  sequence, but as with the other volumes I have left them in
  the sequence they are in the book in case this is a printing
  error.

  The index of names follows the same pattern as previously,
  H7A_C.txt, H7D_J.txt, H7K_Q.txt, and H7R_Z.txt.

  The ALIAS.txt file gives alternative names used, and also 
  where in the book the original record was not clear and two 
  possible versions are given, or where it has been noted the 
  signature name differs from the record.

  Two latin phrases appear on some ELING records, Eodem die, 
  and ult (May).
  The general view is that Eodem die means `on this day', which 
  is not very helpful 300 years later for anyone wanting to 
  know what that date was. To enable an entry in the index of 
  names to be located in the list of marriages, or the book or 
  fiche, I have added the year to that entry as `Eodem die(1666)'. 
  The year I have included is assumed from its location in the 
  register. Eodem die could possibly mean the same date as the 
  previous entry but this is uncertain at this stage.
  The expression `ult', should, according to those whose knowledge of
  Latin is better than mine, mean the last day of the previous month.
  However given the comments in the volumes regarding the quality of 
  some of the original records it is possible it was not used in the 
  correct sense and may refer to the last day of the stated month.
  As with the notes for previous volumes for which I have prepared an
  index, I would suggest that if you find a name of interest, that you
  should check the entry in the volume or fiche as there may be more
  information there. This could be an occupation, the parish they
  were from, or whether they were minors at the time of the marriage. 


  While every care has been taken in transcribing these entries it is
  possible that some errors have slipped through. If you should come 
  across any, I would appreciate being advised of them so that I can
  correct the files.

  If any errors appear in this set of files, I would offer the excuse 
  that many of these files were typed during May 1995, while New 
  Zealand was winning the America's Cup Yacht Races.

  There are 16 volumes in the Hampshire series, volumes 1 and 6 have 
  been indexed, and the next one will be volume 2.
