SO Annu Conf Australas Soc HIV Med. 1994 Nov 3-6;6:92 (unnumbered abstract). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM6/95291914 AB In this presentation I will start with a sketch of the subject matter of ethics. I will then distinguish euthanasia from a number of practices with which it is often confused. I will comment on the difference that (1) motive and (2) intention make to an act. I will comment on the argument in favour of legalising euthanasia which depends on the idea of respect for personal autonomy. I will speculate on why the Dutch have not legalised euthanasia. To conclude, I will ask whether one needs to believe in a Giver to think of life as a gift.
