Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM6/95291896 AB The Sacred Heart Hospice is a palliative care facility with 100 inpatient beds distributed over four wards. As part of a systematic approach to care, a baseline survey of the status and types of wounds experienced by clients with HIV/AIDS and the current management of those wounds was considered a priority. HIV/AIDS client groups within the Hospice include outpatients, community, respite and terminally ill. Differing types of wounds occur within each group and are treated by Hospice staff according to their knowledge and expertise. The survey was designed to identify the proportion of HIV/AIDS clients with wounds, the types of wounds experienced, the relationship between functional status and development of wounds, the application of wound management techniques and the rationale of those practices. Each ward was surveyed weekly for 4 weeks in relation to the criteria. Inconsistencies were apparent in assessment, treatment practices and rationale for management. The survey results led to the conclusion that there is a need to develop specific wound management standards and practices for clients with HIV/AIDS receiving palliative care. These results will be utilised in developing regular wound management audits by the Hospice's recently-established Wound Management Team.
