'Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?' 'That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,' said the Cat. Lewis Carroll. Counselling has been defined as a range of interventions varying from providing information and outlining options through to brief psychotherapy. It has been used synonymously with talking and hand-holding; when nurses provide counselling it is much more than that. This paper describes the role of nurses in the AIDS Medical Unit, and a potential role for nurses throughout Australia. We provide a counselling service, within a community-based specialist clinic. Implicit in our counselling is an understanding of a conscious process of empowering clients to take charge of their lives and responsibility for the decisions they make. Real credibility comes from understanding the disease process, treatments and other HIV issues. A model, with examples of effective interventions by nurses, will be presented. We hope to encourage nurses to review their role in the care of people with HIV and assist them to reclaim an essential element of this role, which has been gradually eroded by other health professionals.
