Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM6/95291886 AB Since 1986 the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Melbourne, has been providing care to people with HIV/AIDS in the Melbourne Metropolitan area and Mornington Peninsula. The HIV/AIDS program consists of three Clinical Nurse Consultants (CNC), supported by a CNC reliever, an educator and liaison staff located in Melbourne's major public hospitals. Following changes in the epidemiology of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, our program has needed to expand to include women, children, families and others not previously affected by the disease. This presentation will discuss the progression of the RDNS HIV/AIDS program over the past few years and will explore some of the recent challenges we have met. These include the specific problems faced by rural nurses caring for people with HIV/AIDS in Victoria, and intravenous drug administration in the home. Our involvement with other community service providers has resulted in the establishment of new and important links which allow for more people with HIV/AIDS to be cared for at home. The paper will conclude by exploring future directions for the program and what new challenges may arise.
