SO Annu Conf Australas Soc HIV Med. 1994 Nov 3-6;6:195 (unnumbered abstract). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM6/95291790 AB The paper explores the nature of advance directives and their use with people living with HIV/AIDS, in particular from a psychosocial perspective. Case examples will illustrate the value of both the process of preparing such a document, and the role that such a document can have in complex treatment decision scenarios, ie treatment, ie unifying/emotional wishes, value/enhanced control. The paper will also highlight the ways in which patient autonomy, relationships with significant others, discussions with health care professionals and approaching death and dying can be enhanced by using advance directives. Attention will be drawn to the limitations of their use, and to their current status and application in Australia and particularly in NSW.
