Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM6/95291778 AB This paper will report on the nursing interventions within a multidisciplinary approach and the methodology used in the management of an HIV/AIDS patient with Karposi's Sarcoma who had received palliative radio therapy as a treatment modality to his left lower leg and foot. The multidisciplinary approach included dressing techniques by nursing staff using calcium alginate, the physiotherapist who employed lymphodoema massage to reduce swelling and fluid retention, also the dietitian who advised on dietary intervention and liquid food supplements to improve calorific intake for this anorexic gentleman. Pain control became an issue with the progression of the disease during the dressing procedures. The patient had a long term infection which caused chronic diarrhoea making mobility, transferring and activities of daily living a further challenge. The dilemma of mobilisation and prolonged bed rest were an ongoing problem. This combined approach resulted in a healing of the lesions on the leg to a degree that decreased the dressing regime to a minimum, and reduced odour and exudate, thus allowing the patient greater control over his life.
