Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM6/95291745 AB OBJECTIVE: To determine the trends in years of potential life lost (YPLL-75), before the age of 75 years, due to selected causes of death in Australia and in selected States for the whole population and for adults aged 25 to 44 years. DESIGN: Australian Bureau of Statistics mortality data and the National AIDS Registry were used to analyse trends between 1983 and 1992. Trends in YPLL-75 due to AIDS were compared with YPLL-75 due to lung cancer, melanoma of the skin, breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, acute myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular disease, traffic accidents and suicide. RESULTS: There have been marked increases in the YPLL-75 due to AIDS and suicide in young males and an increase in deaths due to breast cancer in young females over the past decade. The overall number of YPLL-75 has remained constant, partially because these increases have been counterbalanced by declines in deaths due to traffic accidents, acute myocardial infarction and cerebrovascular disease. There is a State specific trend in YPLL-75 in persons with AIDS with NSW leading, followed by Victoria and Queensland with the other States and Territories having much less of a problem. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the apparent advances in medical care that have led to a decline in premature deaths due to acute myocardial infarction and effective diagnosis and treatment for hypertension, which has resulted in a decline in premature deaths from stroke and the public health measures that have resulted in a reduction in deaths due to traffic accidents, there is a growing and serious problem with HIV, suicide and breast cancer amongst young adults.
