Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASHM6/95291725 AB OBJECTIVE: to describe the clinical and microbiological features of a group of five patients with AIDS presenting with 13 episodes of acute endophthalmitis possibly associated with the use of rifabutin. DESIGN: A retrospective review of medical records and a series of polymerase chain reactions using stored aqueous and vitreous samples. SETTING AND PATIENTS: Patients referred to the Department of Clinical Ophthalmology for management. The study was undertaken at the Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital London. RESULTS: All involved eyes made an excellent response to therapy with broad spectrum intravitreal anti microbial agents, intensive topical corticosteroids and subconjunctival mydriatics. All patients continued all systemic medications including rifabutin. All microbiological investigations were negative. CONCLUSIONS: These five patients with severe hypopyon panuveitis are a previously unrecognised group of patients with uveitis associated with rifabutin therapy.
