Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE AIDS/95700320 AB Two researchers have announced there is strong evidence that Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is actually caused by a newly recognized herpes virus which is called KSHV. Herpesviruses have long been suspected as co-factors in HIV disease, although before now they have not been linked to KS. Another group of scientists suggests that HIV causes the body to produce chemicals that create a hospitable environment for KS to grow. Both groups could be right. What is known about treating KS is that the drugs currently used are not always effective and are costly and toxic. Rapidly executed clinical trials are needed to determine whether new drugs like Doxil, the anti-herpes drugs foscarnet and acyclovir, or the Abbott protease inhibitor, are useful in treating KS.
