Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE AIDS/95700317 AB The combination of AZT and 3TC has proven to be effective in reducing HIV levels in some people in several clinical trials recently reported on at a scientific conference in Scotland. People taking this combination did not experience any more side effects than if they were taking AZT alone. It was also discovered in test tube studies and in Phase I and Phase II studies that 3TC was very effective against the hepatitis B virus. It has not yet been determined whether this combination helps HIV positive people live longer. Glaxo Pharmaceuticals has made 3TC available through a special program while the drug is awaiting approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
