Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE MED/95356726 AB Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and type 2 (HIV-2) both cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Following the licensure of combination HIV-1/HIV-2 screening enzyme immunoassays (EIA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended that beginning in June 1992 all donated whole blood, blood components, and source plasma be screened for antibody to HIV-2 because not all persons infected with HIV-2 can be detected by HIV-1 testing (1,2). This report describes the first two cases of HIV-2 infection detected among potential blood donors since the implementation of recommended HIV-2 screening and summarizes national data about persons known to be infected with HIV-2 during December 1987-June 1995.
