USER MANUAL: EARLY BICYCLES 1) INSTALLATION a) Make certain you are in Windows. The installation program will not run in DOS. b) Put Disk 1 (or the shareware disk) into your floppy drive. From you File Menu choose the Run option. Type a:\setup.exe or b:\setup.exe, depending upon whether a or b is the letter assigned to your 3 1/2" diskette drive. Click on OK. c) Alternatively, open the directory and file display for your floppy drive and double click on setup.exe. 2) Either accept the default path and directory for installation or edit to your own specifications. Choose whether or not to install EARLY BICYCLES as one of your screen saver options in the Desktop Item of the Control Panel. Notice that the word 'default' in the dialog is confusing. There is no 'default' screen saver in the Desktop Item. If you choose this option, EARLY BICYCLES will be installed as just one of your screen saver choices under the name MINICAT in the proper alphabetical position. However, this installation does automatically enable EARLY BICYCLES as your Windows screen saver. In order to disable it, you must go to the Desktop Item of the Control Panel and set your screen saver to 'none' (or another screen saver). See below for an explanation of 'MINICAT'. See the text file 'Your Windows Screen Saver in the album for detailed information about EARLY BICYCLES as a screen saver and how to configure it. 3) The installation will create a program group called MINICAT with a single item in it also called MINICAT. You may change the title of this icon to EARLY BICYCLES if you wish but there are reasons not to do so as explained below. If 1) you have acquired more than one shareware or registered publication from us which uses this interface; 2) installed each into the same directory (default) and 3) chose to place your first MINICAT program item in some Program Group other than the default created by the installation; then you now have two MINICAT program items. You may delete one with no problems. 4) Double Click upon the MINICAT icon and the opening screen of MINICAT is displayed. Notice the bar on the upper right which is labeled either EARLY BICYCLES SHAREWARE or EARLY BICYCLES REGISTERED. Double click on this bar and you will be presented with the EARLY BICYCLES album main screen. If you pause at the opening screen for several seconds, a slide show of all images in the album will begin in the left window. Notice that you can only exit the program from this opening screen using the Close Button. 5) Registered users should realize that 1) if you did not uninstall the shareware version of EARLY BICYCLES (see manual) and 2) installed the registered version into the same directory as the shareware version (which happens automatically if you accept the default installation path), THEN BOTH versions now reside within your MINICAT. If you click the Open button at the bottom of the main screen, you will see a list of installed CATALOGS: EARLY BICYCLES SHAREWARE and EARLY BICYCLES REGISTERED. If you wish to delete the shareware version, You MUST use the uninstall procedure outlined below. If you simply delete the directory and files, it is very likely your MINICAT viewer will not function and you will have no access to the program album. 5) PLEASE READ ALL TEXT FILES, THEY ARE IMPORTANT AND IDENTIFIED BY THE BOOK ICON. THESE FILES INCLUDE A MANUAL FOR USING THE EARLY BICYCLES ALBUM, LICENSE, ORDER FORM FOR REGISTRATION, INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONFIGURING THE SCREEN SAVER, ETC. UNLESS YOU ARE AN EXPERIENCED WINDOWS USER, PLEASE DO NOT SKIP THIS MATERIAL!! 6) At the bottom of the album main screen are buttons for a variety of operations whose functions are self evident (well almost): a) Back (to opening screen); b) Index (of items in album); c) Search (associated text files on key words); and d) Left and Right which scroll the album window horizontally if it is larger than your display resolution. e) The Print button on the main album page does NOT print full size images, only text items such as the manual and text files associated with images. Printout of text associated with images will have a thumbnail image with the text. f) Slide Show will begin a slide show of all images and the display may be customized: the buttons on the left side of the screen to do so should not need explanation. If you stop the Slide Show, the Description button can display associated text which can be printed with a thumbnail image. 7) To read the important text files, click on the book icon for each. The information will be displayed and can be printed with the Print Button. Depending upon the available memory in your system, you may not be able to view the Reality Software Catalog. It can also be found on Disk 2 as catalog.txt (ASCII) and loaded into any text editor or word processor. 8) To view an image at 640 x 480 resolution, click the thumbnail on the main album page. The image will quickly be displayed at this size with buttons for Description (display associated text); Print (image) and Close (back to album main page). If you choose to print the image a dialog is displayed in which you can size the image to the page. The smaller the image size on the page, the quicker the printout. THE COPY BUTTON IS ONLY ENABLED IN THE REGISTERED VERSION OF EARLY BICYCLES. It will put a true color (16.7 million colors) copy of the image on the Windows Clipboard to be pasted into a graphics editor of your choice in order to make graphics files for further use. See the text file 'Royalty Free Graphics Files' for additional explanation. Click on the title to each thumbnail to display associated text. 9) Why the strange terminology? What does MINICAT and CATALOG mean? a) EARLY BICYCLES is a publication in a large series of visionary art and historic transportation photo album/screen savers to be released by Reality Software with this interface. The entire collection is called a Mini-Catalog (MINICAT) and each product within MINICAT is a CATALOG. The CATALOG name in this case is EARLY BICYCLES and the CATEGORY is EARLY BICYCLES SHAREWARE or EARLY BICYCLES REGISTERED (i.e. registered version). CATEGORY names appear on the MINICAT opening screen as Table of Contents listings on the right. These listings are active and clicking on them brings you to a main album screen as you now know. b) As further publications are released in this series, it will be possible for you to have each listed as a CATEGORY in the Table of Contents of a single MINICAT. Each publication can be integrated into the MINICAT you now have. 10) How to Uninstall (Delete) EARLY BICYCLES a) From Program Manager's File Menu, choose Run .. Type c:\makecat\minicat.exe /u (NOTICE THE ESSENTIAL /U SWITCH) and click OK. (A program item may be constructed for this Uninstall program.) A dialog will be presented with a list of MINICAT CATALOGS available for deletion. Choose EARLY BICYCLES and click Uninstall. b) Edit this path statement as necessary if you changed the default destination directory during installation. c) EARLY BICYCLES will be completely removed from your hard drive. If you later wish to use EARLY BICYCLES, it must be re-installed from your program disks. ENJOY!
