Chat Comp for Windows 3.1 Chat with your hard drive. You may have had an interactive chat online through your modem with other people. This software allows you to have a real time interactive chat with your computer's hard drive. Unlike many "trick" programs, it has very little built in text. Therefore, sometimes the chat will be strangely quiet, when at other times the computer will be quite chatty. The idea for this program came from the "Turing Test". Have an operator have an online chat with two "people". One person is human, the other talker is a computer. If the operator cannot tell which is the real human, the computer is said to be intelligent. This, of course, is not attained in this software, but the experiment is fun to try. This software opens, reads, or displays a large number of your files on your computer. If you are not comfortable with that, do not use this program. 2. Close all other running applications before using each time. Installation: standard "file/new" You need a hard drive with a fairly large amount of files with TXT and DOC extensions. WordPerfect and Microsoft word files are now supported. If not, this software will probably not work. Copy the files from this package to an empty subdirectory on your hard drive. You may wish to make a directory on a drive or partition containing a lot of DOC or TXT files. From Windows Program Manager, open a Group. Select File/New, Browse to chatcomp.exe in the directory, and click OK. Click on Change Icon, Click OK, then OK. Windows95 installation is somewhat different. Copy the files to a file folder with Explorer. Then, Right-Click on the Start Button on your desktop. Open the program folder you wish to contain Chat Comp. Select File/New/Shortcut. Browse your drive to the new folder and select chatcomp.exe. Then Next, then Finish. Use: Make sure all other applications are closed. Run Chatcomp. Select a hard drive. Click on Chat. Each time you type, you must press the Enter key, or click on Transmit, to send your message. You may type regular sentences at any time. Click End Chat to end the chat. The software is designed to exit the chat by clicking on End Chat. The Controls are Explained Here! Chat: enter the chat Monologue: like the chat, but you get the ball rolling with a single sentence, then the computer takes over. Drive: select the drive you wish to chat with. You should not use a floppy drive (A or B). Contact Certain Sections Only: click this on if you want to restrict the chat to a certain part of the drive. Select the sections -you can select more than one. If the checkbox is off, all sections will be searched. On the subject: select the slidebar position for the coherence of your chat partner. Best to leave this set to "on the subject." Show keywords: if this is set to on, the word that the computer has found from your sentence will be displayed separate from the computer's answer. Use memorized words: This sets up an internal index so the computer will be more quick to answer in future sessions. This must be clicked on to build or display answers using the index. This can optionally turned off in any session. Jettison memorized words: You can reset your memorized words to start over at any time. This has no effect on any other files on the computer. Print Last Chat: After a chat, and before beginning a new one, you can get a printout of that chat. Show pictures: During the chat some .BMP pictures from your computer may be displayed. Not always.
