They have a host of features, and even support the addition of descriptions to compressed files. However, they are also command driven, which makes them difficult to use for non experts. In addition, there is no way to add or extract 4Dos file descriptions. There are other shells for PKZip & PKUnzip on the market. Some of them are undoubtedly quite good. But what I wanted was a program that would let you tag files to add to a ZIP file, and then add them along with their 4Dos file descriptions. In the same way I wanted to be able to tag the files in ZIP file, and extract them along with their 4DOS file descriptions. I also wanted to be able to see the descriptions along with the files. None of the available shells I looked at would do this. In 1989 I wrote the first version of ZIP.EXE to do this in a DOS environment. When I moved to Windows 3.0, I became fed up with having to open a DOS window to go and zip or unzip files. Finally I got around to writing a Windows equivalent that could be launched from program manager - ZIPW.EXE. Both these programs serve the same function that of adding files to and extracting files from a ZIP file, while automating the add/extract of the associated 4DOS descriptions. Of the two, ZIPW is more sophisticated, using as it does the Multiple Document Interface to permit you to work on more than one ZIP file at a time. One of these days I will get around to rewriting the Dos version to provide similar features. You are free to use them provided you own a copy of Microsoft Windows. PKZ204 is supplied by PKWare as a fully functional evaluation copy of PKZIP and PKUNZIP. If you decide to use the programs after the evaluation period then you are required to make a payment to PKWare for a license to use the programs. ZIPW.EXE is a fully functional program provided for evaluation. If you continue to use these programs after a 30 day evaluation period then you are required to purchase a license from Fugue Software. Both PKWare and Fugue Software are members of the ASP, so you are assured of receiving quality software. Registration ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ Please see ORDER.FRM for registration details. The software should be installed automatically, and a Program manager group should be created. You can later move the icons to another group if you desire. If you do not have a copy of PKZIP & PKUNZIKP, you should then follow the DOS installation instructions to install PKZip & PKUnzip on your disk. If all you received was the file ZIPW20.ZIP or ZIPW20.EXE, then all the files have been archived into this file. In this case you need to extract all the files to either your hard disk or your floppy disk before you can run SETUP: From DOS, copy the file to yor hard disk and extract the files for .ZIP type in PKUNZIP -E ZIPW20 for .EXE type in ZIPW20 Then run SETUP from program manager as described above WORKING DIRECTORY ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ When the program is installed, the working directory is set to the program directory. If you change the working directory, you may get an error if you try to Zip/Unzip if Windows cannot find the PIF file ZIPW_.PIF (this is in the program directory). If this happens, copy the file ZIPW_.PIF into the work directory, or change the work directory back to the program directory. (See Networking below) NEWTORKS ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ You can run the program from the network server, but you will need to take some manual action during installation. The default installation sets the work directory to the program directory, and so the program expects to find its support ZIPW_.PIF there. It will also write ZIPW$.BAT into the work directory (thus allowing it to avoid collisions on a network). Windows in turn will expect to find the BAT file in the same directory (or at least on the PATH) as the PIF file. It does not always examing the working directory. When you set up a workstation, you need to change the work directory to the user's local disk or their user directory on the network. The work files including the list of files to extact ZIPLIST.TMP, the descriptions to be added during a zip operation ZIPDESC.TMP, and the ZIPW$.BAT file will all be written to this work directory. You will need to copy the file ZIPW_.PIF from the program directory to the work directory. In some rare circumstances, windows will still not search the work directory, and you will receive a quick DOS error like "unknown command c:\dos\zipw$.bat" This seems to occur when your working directory is on your boot drive. If you DO experience this, you will need to modify the ZIPW_.PIF with PIFEDIT to change the program from ZIPW$.BAT to include the full path of the working directory: eg C:\UTILS\ZIPW$.BAT ÍÍ END OF DOCUMENT ÍÍ
