--------------------------------------------------------------------- Delrina WinFax Scanner 4.1 README Notes November 20, 1995. ===================================================================== The following information reflects changes and additions made since the WinFax Scanner User's Guide went to press, and should be reviewed prior to running WinFax Scanner. Where applicable, these notes refer to sections in the WinFax Scanner User's Guide. This Version ============ Delrina WinFax Scanner 4.1 is designed to work with the following: - WinFax PRO 4.0 under Windows 3.1 - WinFax PRO 4.0 under Windows 95 - WinFax PRO 7.0 under Windows 95. Resolution Setting (page 9) =========================== When scanning documents you intend to convert to text using the WinFax Optical Character Recognition (OCR) feature, you should set the resolution to 200 dpi. If you are using an OCR application other than WinFax, scanning should be set at 300 dpi for optimal results. Cleaning the Automatic Document Feeder (page 21) ================================================ When cleaning the rollers in the scanner, press the paper detect switch near the top edge of the open scanner door. This causes the rollers to rotate for 15 seconds. While the rollers are spinning, clean them using the method described in your WinFax Scanner User's Guide. Troubleshooting (page 22) ========================= Situation: The "READY" and "ERROR" lights continue to blink when the scanner door is closed. Solution: If you turned the scanner on when the door was open, the scanner will not operate even after you close the door. To reset the scanner, close the door, turn the power off, then turn it back on. Scanning at 256 Grayscale ========================= Images scanned at 256 grayscale will be converted to grayscale-like, dithered images by WinFax Scanner before being faxed, saved as attachments, converted to text using OCR, or saved to disk in FXS file format. Scanning in 256 grayscale requires a lot of memory and disk space, especially at 200 dpi or 300 dpi. Each 300 dpi page with 256 grays requires about 9 MB memory. Consider halftone images as an alternative to grayscale. Many printers will produce results comparable in quality to grayscale images, but using halftone images. Halftone images also typically print much faster than grayscale images. Setting Halftone Patterns ========================= Halftone patterns are used to produce a Black and White image from a grayscale original, using dot patterns to create the illusion of gray in a Black and White image. WinFax Scanner supports six different halftone patterns. To change the halftone pattern, exit WinFax Scanner. Open the file WFXSCAN.INI (in your Windows directory) in Notepad. Under the [Defaults] section, find the entry: Halftone Pattern=0 Above this line, paste the lines below into WFXSCAN.INI for reference. The 8x8 patterns produce images with up to 64 apparent shades of gray. The 4x4 patterns produce images with up to 16 apparent shades of gray. ;Halftone Pattern=1 ;8x8 Coarse (factory default) ;Halftone Pattern=2 ;8x8 Fine ;Halftone Pattern=3 ;8x8 Vertical ;Halftone Pattern=4 ;8x8 Horizontal ;Halftone Pattern=5 ;4x4 Coarse ;Halftone Pattern=6 ;4x4 Fine To change the halftone pattern, change the value in the line above to the number corresponding with the desired halftone pattern. Save WFXSCAN.INI, and restart WinFax Scanner. The specified halftone pattern will be used for all halftone scanning. The halftone setting does not affect Black and White or 256 grayscale scanning. When using halftone scanning, the results will depend on the particular image and the halftone pattern. Halftone pattern 0 is the factory default (currently set to 8x8 Coarse) and produces good image quality for most images. Halftone pattern 2 produces better image quality on some images. Halftone pattern 4 is generally the most efficient for faxing 64 shades, as it reduces fax transmission times. You may want to experiment with different brightness levels and halftone patterns to fine tune the image quality. Note: Halftones reduce the accuracy of Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Do not use halftone scanning if you intend to use OCR. Twain-compliant Applications ============================ If you start WinFax Scanner from WinFax PRO, WinFax Scanner temporarily disables the application until the scan operation is completed or canceled. GIF File Format =============== Support for GIF file format has been removed from both WinFax Scanner and LeadView LITE. The LEAD50.DLL has been replaced with LEAD51.DLL to reflect this change. Right Mouse Button ================== In Windows 95 and Windows 3.1, you can use the right mouse button to select a page or display a context sensitive menu in the thumbnail area. To select a page in the thumbnail area, press the right mouse button. To select multiple pages, press the SHIFT or CTRL key while pressing the right mouse button. A context sensitive menu appears when you release the right mouse button while the cursor is positioned over a page in the thumbnail area.
