Dauntsey Parish Registers This transcript is an attempt to amalgamate three versions of the registers for the parish of Dauntsey, Wiltshire UK., spanning the years 1653 - 1812 for baptisms 1653 - 1812 for burials 1654 - 1754 for marriages (containing one spurious entry for 1790) There are two original registers in existence, both in varying states of disrepair. The third register is a transcript made by the then schoolmaster, Matthew Harding, who died in 1780. The two originals perhaps belonged to the curate and the churchwarden. In his transcription, Harding 'corrected' the spelling of many words and names in the original. This meant that surnames were normalised (e.g. 'Scull' became 'Skull'; 'Skues', 'Shusse' and 'Skuce' all became 'Skuse'). This transcript is based on Harding's version. I have then examined the remains of the original registers and noted the differences. The abbreviations and markings used are as follows:- d daughter of s son of otp of this parish botp both of this parish bb baseborn Mary [Marie] word(s) in brackets appear only in original, or they were spelt differently (e.g. 'Mary' in the transcript where the original contains 'Marie') Mary [Marie,Anne] As above, although two original entries were found and they were different. [***] entry appears only in original Clive Henly 9, Renfrew Drive, Wollaton, Nottingham. NG8 2FX November 1993 NOTE: This archive is copyright C.R.G.HENLY 1995.
