Welcome to good old Wassamadder U... set in the verdant mountains of northeastern Alabama, it was founded in the late 1800s by Julius K. Pratt and Mortimer J. Philpott. These two fine men had no idea they were founding a future bastion of higher education: they just wanted to have a nice place for playing football and holding dances afterwards. Soon, though, the natural attraction of the more mechanically-inclined set to football led to Pratt's bright idea that the site be used for vocational-technical training. The Crabtree County School of Technical Skills opened in 1895 and served a nine-county area. As time passed, the school's focus expanded to include subjects normally reserved for regular colleges. In 1923, the State of Alabama gave the nod, and CCSTS became NEAC -- Northeastern Alabama College. Its fine curriculum attracted students from all over the world, and in 1947, it became the University of Northeast Alabama (UNEA -- UNA was already taken). However, the accolades given to a certain university in Tuscaloosa and to another in Auburn led the school's leaders to pursue their own football program. Education fell by the wayside as the faculty and students became caught up in the gridiron madness. The student body became notorious for its outrageously aggressive behavior, which can be summed up in its fight song: "We will crunch your bones to dust, but that is just the start... Then we'll grab your arms and legs and tear you right a-part!!! We will jump upon your face and feed you to our hogs... Because we think that you're so bad You aren't fit for our dogs!" Such heartwarming attitudes led to the other teams (and their athletic supporters) suggesting a new name for UNEA: Wassamadder U.
