INSTALLING THE AGE OF DISCOVERY SCENARIO If they don't already reside there, copy all of the files contained in the zip file into the civ2 directory. If you don't know where it is, try the default path of c:\mps\civ2. CHANGING RULES.TXT During the design of this scenario, we felt it necessary to change the numbers of several item paramaters stored in the rules.txt file, primarily for the sake of greater historical accuracy. We have included a modified rules.txt file entitled disrules.txt in the zip file that incorporate these changes. You need only exchange this file with the rule.txt file located in your civ2 directory to play the scenario as it was intended to be played. WARNING: These are permanent changes so the player must be confident he can follow the instructions given below to recover his original rules.txt file before he attempt to change it. Changes: 1. The movement allowance of caravels has been increased from 3 to 9; the movement allowances of galleons and frigates have been increased to 12. Even with this extraordinary boost in speed, these ships still cannot match their historical counterparts. 2. The "Gems" terrain feature has been changed from providing 1 food, 0 shields, and 4 trade to providing 3 food, 1 shield, and 8 trade. This has been done to reflect the extreme importance of trade with and settlement of the East Indies, Africa, and South America to the European motivation for expansion. We couldn't improve the more obvious Spice special resource as it doesn't appear anywhere on the scenario map. 3. Due to the close proximity of the advance, Magnetism, to the advance, Steam Engine, in the research path, it is practically impossible to include the discovery of the former with its desirable technology, galleons and frigates, and exclude the latter with its undesirable technology of ironclads. We solved the problem by removing Steam Engine from the research path. For similar reasons, we also removed Electricity and Conscription. 4. The characteristics of many of the leaders have been modified to more accurately reflect their historical aims and philosophies. As the changes are both numerous and invisible to the player, we won't take up space recounting them here. 5. The AI preference for certain discoveries has been curtailed to channel it within historical directions. CHANGING THE RULES.TXT FILE 1. All of the changes for this scenario will be stored in a special file, rules.txt. When installing the game, this file, along with some other critical files, are copied from the CD onto the hard drive for ease of access. You will need to know where this is file is stored on your hard drive to make the changes. For most people, the file is located in a default directory, the path to which is c:\mps\civ2. If you changed the path of the directory then you should know how to get to it. Proceed to this directory, either default or customized. 2. You first need to rename the rules.txt file found here. You will then replace this file with the special file included with the scenario and containing the changes. When you are done playing the scenario, you will reverse the process and replace the scenario rules.txt with the original one. 3. Rename rules.txt as rules1.txt. This indicates that it is the first and original rules.txt for the game. 4. Rename disrules.txt as rules.txt. You can now play the Age of Discovery scenario with the appropriate modifications. Be aware that the changes recounted above will appear in any Civ2 game you play and not just the Age of Discovery scenario. This is because all games refer to the same rules.txt file. 5. To recover the original rules.txt, first rename the current rules.txt as disrules.txt and then rename rules1.txt as rules.txt. You are returned to the original parameters. 6. If you get into trouble and can't get the original rules.txt back, try reinstalling the game again.
