NewsWerthy Offline Mail Reader ------------------------------ This is the README.TXT file for version 2.10 of NewsWerthy. NewsWerthy is a DOS based offline mail reader for the SOUP format. It is copyrighted and it is shareware. There is a registration fee of $25 for use of NewsWerthy after the 30 day evaluation period. See the file NWERTHY.RDR for details. You are encouraged to make copies and distribute NewsWerthy, as long all files (as listed) are included in the archive. See the file LICENSE.TXT for details. The lastest version can always be found using ftp at: ftp.eskimo.com in the /u/b/billw directory. Also check my web page at http://www.eskimo.com/~billw/software.html. You should have the following 15 files in the archive: INSTALL.BAT (NewsWerthy installation batch file) WELCOME.PKT (Small SOUP packet with mini-tutorial) NWERTHY.RDR (Registration Form) NWERTHY.EXE (The executable) NWERTHY.H16 (Online help for NewsWerthy) README.TXT (This file) NWERTHY.MAN (NewsWerthy Manual) FILE_ID.DIZ (Short discription of NewsWerthy for BBS's) PGPSHELL.BAT (shell for use with pgs.exe) SOUP (Unix script file to get mail and news) RFC1036.TXT (Detailed description of usenet message) SOUP12.DOC (Detailed description of SOUP format) WHATS.NEW (History of NewsWerthy releases) YARNTONW.EXE (Converts Yarn's address book to NewsWerthy's) LICENSE.TXT (License agreement for using NewsWerthy) WHATS NEW: 6/9/96 (version 2.10) * Fixes bug where sometimes a group can't be marked unread. * Added a "saved" directory. By default, text files and file attachments will be saved here. The editor will also default to using this directory. * Deletes of a large number of messages is now as fast as deleting one message. The more messages you delete, the faster it will be (sounds backwards, but true). * Added improvements to the file attachment saving. If no file attachment is found, mark the first line of the encoded text, to force it to find a non-standard file attachment. * Added marking the current subject read or marked. * Added marking of messages for use with saving, printing and deleting of messages. * Added option to move (save, then delete) message. * Can now mark all messages read by pressing * from the last message in a newsgroup. * Bookmarking of messages has been extensively revised (internally). This was done to add the following: An R in the messages list, and REPLIED in the message marks a message that has been replied to. Also S for a saved message and Saved in the message. Also if only viewing unread messages (space bar pressed), deleting a message will not remove the read messages from the message list. * Picklists are now displayed in a larger list. * Added "increment packet name" option in the message options in the setup menu. Save up to 9 previous packets. * Added option to not display in the newsgroup list, newsgroups with zero unread messages. See the "Hide Read Newsgroups" in the message options in the setup menu. Pressing Alt-H will also alternate between hiding and showing the newsgroups with zero unread messages. * Fixed bug which caused lock-up when deleting last message in a group. * Added option to not split email into separate "newsgroups". * Added option to use external text file viewer to view message. Press Alt-V from the messages list, to start viewer entered in setup. * Added command switch (/p packetname) to pre-process (create indexes) the packet (Registered users only). * Changed multiple setups feature so that it now requires "/s setup" (without quotes) on command line instead of just the filename. * Long lines are now wrapped when quoting the message for a reply. * The message list is immediatly updated (killed messages removed) when a message is added to a kill list. * Fixed bug where the extra headers picklist in the menu, was not linked to the one in the replies dialog. * The "Max. Messages in Newsgroup" in Databasing Options dialog is now the limit after importing the new packet, not before, as it was previously. * A few other minor improvements. TO INSTALL: * Make sure pkzip and pkunzip are on your path: To verify that they are, enter pkzip at a DOS prompt. If you receive the message "Bad command or file name", then you'll need to locate pkzip and note the directory. Edit the file C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT, and add a semicolon (;) and the directory to the end of the line that starts with PATH=. Of course if you don't have a copy of pkzip, you'll have to get one. This can most likely be found at the same location you found NewsWerthy. * Run the install batch file from where you have unzipped the NWRTH210.ZIP like so: install C: Where C: is your hard drive. The above will install NewsWerthy in the C:\NWERTHY directory and run NewsWerthy. A welcome packet will be opened that contains a mini-tutorial. After viewing the tutorial (which is really a SOUP packet), you'll want to finish entering your setup data. Follow the directions in the tutorial to finish setting up NewsWerthy. You can view the welcome packet again by pressing F4 (Read News). Or you can view it later by placing it in your download directory, press F3 (New Packet) and select it to open it. * Or if you prefer to install NewsWerthy manually, first make a directory named NWERTHY, then copy NWERTHY.* to it. You'll also need a subdirectory named FOLDERS (for saved messages) and a SAVED subdirectory for saved text files and file attachments. Make sure you have set the TEMP or TMP environment variable (enter set, at a DOS prompt to check). If not add a "SET TEMP=C:\TEMP" line to your autoexec.bat file and create the TEMP directory. You'll need at least 500k free for the TEMP directory. FOR UPGRADES: You can only use the install batch file to upgrade if you've installed NewsWerthy in the \NWERTHY directory. Otherwise use the manual install procedure above. * For those who are upgrading from a version prior to 1.60: Turn on the Word wrap feature in the Message Options dialog under the Setup menu. The NWERTHY.BKM file is no longer used, and may be deleted from the work directory. Ignore the error message about not being able to remove 0000000.BKM file, the first time NewsWerthy is run. * For those who are upgrading from a version prior to 1.70: Make sure that your email address is entered in the Reply-To picklist and add any mailing lists to the address book. This is used in separating out your personal mail from mailing lists. * For those who are upgrading from a version prior to 2.00: Turn off the "Expire All Messages" option, if you want to use NewsWerthy as a "Databasing" reader. Read the manual about how to use the Databasing Options. Additional information about the Databasing Options can be found in the section on "Reading the Database with the Number Keypad". * For all upgrades: If you use the multiple setups feature, change your command to use "nwerthy /s setup" (without quotes) on command line, instead of just the filename. If you want NewsWerthy to continue to separate mailing lists into their own "newsgroups", set this option in the message options in the setup menu (under miscellaneous). If for some reason after running 2.10 you decide to return to a previous version, you need to delete all .BKM files from the working directory (the format for 2.10 is not compatible with previous versions). * For those who were using Yarn: First install NewsWerthy per the above instructions. To convert Yarn's address book, to NewsWerthy's address book. Run YARNTONW.EXE from the \NWERTHY directory like so: YARNTONW ADDRBOOK This will create a file named NWERTHY.PL9 in the work directory you've got listed in the Setup menu. To convert your folders, run the SENDFOLD utility included with YUTIL02.ZIP in the dos/offline directory on SimTel. Then open the SOUP packet this creates in NewsWerthy, and save the messages to the correct folders. GETTING STARTED: As a minimum, you'll want to read the Quick Start Procedure (section II) in the manual (NWERTHY.DOC) and consult the online help often. If you haven't used UQWK with the SOUP format before, or want to learn how to use NewsWerthy better, read section III of the manual.
