************************************************************************************************* Readme file for WinGate Version 1.3.08 Copyright (c) 1995-1996 Adrien de Croy The zip archive distribution contains the following files: Readme.txt - This file WinGate.exe - the main application WGSetup.exe - A small setup dialog for easier setup (overwrites any previous settings!) WinGate.doc - A Word for Windows 6 user manual. It is strongly recommended that you read this EVEN IF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH WINGATE. Additional documentation can be found on the World Wide Web at: http://nz.com/NZ/Commerce/creative-cgi/special/qbik/wingate.htm This archive includes the latest help, and an FAQ, along with details for registering the software. ************************************************************************************************* This File was released on 30 March 1996 Version 1.3.08 is the final interim release prior to the release of WinGate version 2.0. This delay is in the main due to the restructuring of WinGate, and the extent of the changes required. There are however a few added features. Changes since 1.3.07 * Added POP3 proxy * Completely changed key and licensing system (the person who wrote the key generator for WinGate gets to take a bow here - I was going to do it anyway, but this was a good incentive). * Fixed Problem with FTP proxy crashing under NT 4.0 * General facelift * Added "Dial now" button in Dialler tab * Changed Dialler Options - removed the take over existing connections option - added option to use Synchronous RASDial call (as per version 1.3.04) * Added option to DNS forwarding to control whether DNS request will initiate dialler * Added warning dialog on closing WinGate or resetting the dialler if users are connected. Take a look at the WinGate home pages to see what features are being built into Version 2.0 I hope you will agree it will be well worth the wait. IMPORTANT NOTE. If you are currently registered for more than a single user license (i.e you paid for something) then you will need a new key for WinGate 1.3.08. I will be mailing these out automatically to all registered holders of 2 user licenses and above. However in the event of your key not arriving before 2 April, you should contact me by email. I have a list of bad email addresses that makes the LA area phonebook look like roll-call at the Adolf Hitler fan-club annual general meeting. ************************************************************************************************* This File was released on 28 February 1996 Version 1.3.07 is an interim release due to missing deadlines on the release of version 1.4 (well at least I am honest). There are a couple of changes over 1.3.06 * got rid of the dreaded Socket-error 0 * optimised a few more sockets calls, so things should be a bit quicker. * expiry date moved out to 31 March 1996. I expect to release version 1.4 before the expiry date of this version ************************************************************************************************* This File was released on 2 February 1996 Version 1.3.06 is a further patch to version 1.3.04, and addresses the following problems * Dial on demand - now uses asynchronous RasDial call (so you get more feedback) * FTP gateway can now work through another firewall. * Sockets - problem with various hangs etc fixed (message queue was locking up). ************************************************************************************************* This File was released on 22 January 1996 Version 1.3.04 is a further patch to version 1.3.03, and addresses the following problems * Dial on demand - port left in unusable state after link failure - fixed * Dial on demand - auto connect and auto disconnect fixed * Dial on demand - password not stored properly - fixed * Sockets - problem with unreliable connects fixed (problem with Microsoft class). ************************************************************************************************* Version 1.3.03 not released ************************************************************************************************* This File was released on 16 January 1996 Version 1.3.02 is a patch to version 1.3, and addresses the following problems * Dial on demand - some profiles do not store username and password - added spot to enter these - tested ************************************************************************************************* This File was released on 15 January 1996 Version 1.3 is a medium sized upgrade to version 1.2b, and has the following added features * Dial on demand * a couple of bug fixes. * updated setup program **************************************IMPORTANT NOTE********************************************* If you have been running version 1.2, do not run the setup program, simply replace (back up first) your current copy, and run WinGate version 1.3. This will update your registry settings for the new version and keep your old settings intact. ************************************************************************************************* This File was released on the 2nd December 1995 Version 1.2b is another interim update to version 1.2a, and fixes the following bugs: * Bug in Socks server with misbehaved Socks clients causing WinGate crash * Fixed some timing problems in the WWW Proxy, which caused occasional problems submitting Forms in Netscape. * SOCKS, FTP data, and WWW Proxy transfers now run as idle threads, consuming much less processor. ************************************************************************************************* This file was released on the 29th November 1995. Version 1.2a is an interim update to version 1.2 (released 25 November 1995), and fixes a couple of bugs - specifically: * Sockets not being made available for re-use properly under Windows95 causing lockup * Telnet gateway was sending a single new-line character to remote sites upon connect * DNS patch is now DNS relaying under a settings tab, and can be shut down and restarted Note, when running under Windows95, you may experience Socket-error 10055 errors when trying to connect under heavy load (i.e around 35 - 40 active sessions). This seems to be a limitation in the operating system, running out of sockets. Under WindowsNT I have not found any limitations Changes from WinGate V1.0.03 to version 1.2 are: * Multi-threaded operation for smoother access. * New Interface - tabbed dialogs. * Able to monitor active sessions and users. * SOCKS server. * DNS Patch. * Registration and user limitations. * Plus a couple of bug-fixes. Please report any bugs to: wingate-bugs@iconz.co.nz Any further requests for help should go to (if you are registereed with more than the free key): wingate-help@iconz.co.nz Unfortunately due to demand for support, I can no longer offer free support to free users of WinGate.
