HYCOM is a combination of tools which assist in the development of
applications to be delivered on DOS machines.  It includes:
      a database system,
      Hypertext tools,
      a simulation engine,
      a list processing language,
      and a supportive programming environment.
      
The application database is defined by a series of table definitions.
These definitions group together the display rules, validations and
help text for a table. From these definitions, the HYCOM code 
generator creates C code for reading, validating, saving, and printing
the data.
      
The Hypertext subsystem displays Hypertext cards, and can also control
the flow of the application.  Control may be directed to batch files, to 
the database editor, and also to C functions within the application program.

The database and HyperText systems are integrated with a consistent 
appearance to the end-user.  Also, both can be instructed to respond
to application defined function keys.  If desired, both can be controlled
with a mouse.  Screen colours can be set by the user.

An application developer can use the simulation engine to build an
event-based simulation.  HYCOM provides functions for scheduling simulation
events, generating random event times and also provides facilities for the
checkpoint and restart of a simulation.

A significant feature of this database methodology is that data is read
directly into lists of data structures - the structures are generated
from the data definitions.  The data is then directly available for
processing.  In many applications, and especially simulations, this
relieves the programmer from coding and maintaining the structure definitions
and the massive amounts of code that would otherwise be needed to read
and validate the data.  The result can be an object class structure, which
is consistent between the database and the C program which uses the data.

Programmer support includes sets of functions in the following areas:
      - memory management,
      - control of open and closed files,
      - error trapping,
      - program tracing,
      - end-user dialog.
