McAfee BootShield v1.01 Release Notes - February 1996 Thank you for your purchase of McAfee BootShield. As with all McAfee products, we would like to have your comments. If you have not already done so, please complete and return the registration card and include your suggestions or comments. If you downloaded the product from a McAfee online service, you need to complete the registration form provided in the file README.1ST. Here are the product's main features: - Secure installation--since the key to protecting against boot sector viruses is to start with a virus-free boot sector, the Scan component of BootShield is automatically run during installation to determine whether boot viruses exist before installing BootShield. - Ability to identify and prevent infection by boot sector viruses--once intalled, the BootLock component "locks out" viruses from the computer's boot sector. - Optional image backup utility -- ImageStor is BootShield's disaster recovery utility. It's easy to use and allows you to quickly create a backup disk image which you can use to restore data in the event of a data loss situation. ___________________________ What is New in this Release * Enhanced installation program. The new installation script now detects what operating systems are installed on the destination computer. If Windows 95, Windows NT, or OS/2 is installed, the script will warn the user about possible problems they might encounter. The script also detects if the user is currently running Windows or OS/2 and aborts the installation. This is because the nature of these environments prevent the proper activation of the BootLock technology. * Expanded error messages. Several of the error message within the BootLock portion of the program were expanded to provide clearer information about the nature of the problem and the steps to resolve it. * Updated virus definitions for SCAN component. The SCAN component (from the VirusScan product) relies upon external data files for ensuring that the system is free from boot viruses prior to installation. These data files have been updated to increase the number of viruses which can be identified. This helps ensure that the computer is clean before the BootLock protection is enabled. _____________________________________________ What to do if You Received the Product Online BootShield is available from the McAfee online services (for example, our BBS and Web site -- see the contact information below). You'll receive these files: BSH-101E.ZIP BootShield 1.01 (Evaluation) BSH-101L.ZIP BootShield 1.01 (Licensed) BSH10MAN.ZIP Manual for BootShield 1.0 Decompressing Your Files: Use PKUNZIP to decompress the BootShield product files either onto floppy diskettes or into a directory on your hard drive or server. Before you install, you'll want to verify that the files you downloaded are exactly the same as when we posted them online. We recommend you perform this task for maximum anti-virus protection. You can use the Validate program included with this package to accomplish this. For information on using Validate, consult the README.1ST file. __________________ Before You Install Before you install, we recommend that you access the online user's manual which contains detailed installation instructions. To do this, follow the steps below: * Start the Acrobat Reader. NOTE: If you do not already have the Acrobat Reader, you can download it from the McAfee home page located at www.mcafee.com. Once you arrive at the home page, just select 'Download McAfee', 'Download McAfee Product,' and get the file ACROWIN.ZIP from the utility area. Then, unZIP the file and run ACROREAD.EXE and follow the instructions on the screen to install the reader. * Open the BSHIELD.PDF file. * Click on the table of contents topic containing the information you'd like to view. You'll find installation instructions in Chapter 3, "Protecting the Boot Sector." ___________________________________________________ Changing from an Evaluation to the Licensed Version To begin using the licensed version of BootShield, you need to uninstall your evaluation copy. To uninstall, you'll need to have the backup diskette that was created during installation for the specific machine. Without the backup diskette, you cannot remove BootLock from the system. See the online manual for step-by-step instructions for uninstalling BootLock. _______________________ Installation Procedures Review these basic requirements for installing and running BootShield. - PC with a 386SX processor or better - DOS version as follows: For BootLock and Scan you need DOS version 3.3 or later For ImageStor you need DOS version 6.0 or later - At least 512 kilobytes of Random Access Memory (RAM) - At least 2 megabytes of disk space - For tape backup, a SCSI tape device that use ASPI. If you're installing from diskette, insert Disk 1. Or if you downloaded the product from a McAfee online service, change to the location where the files were stored after you decompressed them. Enter the following command at the DOS prompt: X:INSTALL X: where X is the drive that contains the diskette. Then follow the instructions on the installation screens. Don't forget to register your product. A registration form is provided in the file README.1ST. ***Note that it is critical to keep the recovery diskette that is created during installation on hand. You may need this diskette should you need to remove BootLock from the system -- without it, you may not be able to uninstall BootLock. ______________________________________________ Uninstalling BootLock from a Recovery Diskette When you boot from the BootLock recovery diskette, created by the install process, and attempt to Uninstall using the BSSETUP.EXE utility, the program informs you that you need to supply the Workstation ID before you can complete the process. However, this will not succeed, even if you specify the correct information. In order to remove the BootLock protection while running from the recovery diskette, you must do the following: 1. Execute the BSSETUP.EXE program. 2. Choose the Install BootLock option. 3. Fill in the Name, Company name, Diskette ID, and Workstation ID fields EXACTLY as originally entered during installation. 4. Press the key - DO NOT choose Start Installation! 5. Now, select the Uninstall BootLock or Emergency Uninstallation, as needed. Following these steps, the uninstallation should proceed without any difficulty. Note, this problem will not be encountered when running from the hard drive BootLock is installed to. Therefore, it is recommended that you always remove BootLock by running BSSETUP.EXE from the hard drive it is installed to. Only if you have difficulty accessing the computer should you user the Recovery diskette.
