The File Assist Configuration Utility (FACFG.EXE) 95.0.B -------------------------------------------------------- Use the File Assist Configuration Utility to adjust settings for Norton File Assist or Norton LFN Enabler for specific dialog boxes in specific programs. When you remove File Assist features or disable long file name support in one or more dialog boxes in a program, you do not change the File Assist or long file name support in other programs. Previous releases of FACFG.EXE will not work with Norton Navigator version 95.0.B. When to use the File Assist Configuration Utility ------------------------------------------------- Disable File Assist and LFN support when: + File Assist or LFN Enabler causes a program to crash or have other problems. If the program crashes when a dialog box containing File Assist icons or long file name support is opened, first turn off all File Assist and LFN Enabler functions. Use Norton Navigator Control Center to do this. Then start the File Assist Configuration Utility and disable File Assist and LFN Enabler in the dialog boxes--or in the entire program--where they cause trouble. + You want to use only one or two features in specific dialog boxes. You can use File Assist Configuration Utility to turn off specific File Assist features in specific dialog boxes, and keep all features in other dialog boxes. You can also use it to turn off only the LFN Enabler in specific dialog boxes of older, 16-bit Windows programs. When NOT to use the File Assist Configuration Utility ----------------------------------------------------- File Assist and LFN Enabler defaults specifically disable all settings for some older Windows programs, such as Quicken. If you try to turn on File Assist or the LFN Enabler in one of these programs, a warning message appears, telling you that the features are disabled. If you ignore the warning and turn on File Assist or the LFN Enabler, the program might crash and cause you to lose data. If you have turned File Assist and LFN Enabler off yourself, then you can ignore the warning message, and turn them back on again. How to use the File Assist Configuration Utility ------------------------------------------------ The File Assist Configuration Utility works like a Windows 95 wizard. Start it by double-clicking the file name or by running it from any Run dialog box. Screen 1 The first screen explains the utility. It also tells you to open the program and dialog box where you want to change settings before you click Next> in the wizard screen. Screen 2 When you click Next>, a screen that contains the Finder Tool appears. Click the Finder Tool and drag it to the dialog box where you want to change settings. When you release the mouse button in the dialog box, dialog box information appears in the Window Specifications pane of the wizard screen. ________________________________________________________________ Check the information to make sure that you have identified the dialog box you want to change. ________________________________________________________________ When you are sure you have the right dialog box, click Next> to specify the changes you want to make. Screen 3 You can choose to disable all settings for the dialog box, or only a few settings. If you choose to enable features that have not been generally enabled in Norton Navigator Control Center, these features do not appear until you enable them generally. When you have selected features to enable or disable, click Next>. To save the changed settings. Screen 4 File Assist restarts so that you can see the effect of the saved settings, unless it is not enabled in Norton Navigator Control Center. To see saved settings in that case, turn on File Assist in the Control Center, and open the dialog box again to see the settings. Click Finish to exit from the File Assist Configuration Utility. If you don't like the changes, run the File Assist Configuration Utility again and adjust the settings.
