NAPOLEON THE EMPEROR ---- blurb This file is for the benefit of those you who are browsing online in an archive or BBS library. It is a longer description of "Napoleon the Emperor" than is in "File_Id.diz". In "NAPOLEON THE EMPEROR", a shareware Windows 3.1+ wargame, the battle of Waterloo (a.k.a. Belle Alliance, a.k.a. Mont St.Jean) is simulated. In the registered version of the program the battles of Ligny and of Quatre Bras, which led up to the climatic clash at Waterloo are also simulated. Waterloo was the first and last meeting of Wellington and Napoleon in battle. The brave and colorful Prussian Field-Marshal Blucher also makes his last appearance. This battle on the long day of June 18th 1815 was extremely tense since the British/Allied army needed to hang on until the Prussians arrived and the French needed to defeat them first. Ligny saw Napoleon's last victory. A victory that fell short of being the decisive battle of annilhilaton that he needed. Blucher leading the cavalry charges that allowed most of his troops to escape had his horse fall on him, but lived to fight two days later at Waterloo. To his dying day Blucher called that battle "Belle Alliance". At the same time as Ligny and a few miles away Wellington was keeping Marshal Ney busy at Quatre Bras. This battle was as close as Wellington ever came to defeat. For once the French were able to force him to fight on ground not of his own chosing. He began the fight heavily outnumbered although reinforcements steadily arriving eventually brought his strength up to the point that he was able to sucessfully counter-attack. "NAPOLEON THE EMPEROR" has mostly brigade sized units organized into divisions and corps. The map covers an area roughly 6 1/2 miles (10 km) wide by 4 1/2 miles (7 km) high with individual locations being roughly 200 yds (m) in size. The map displays at both sizeable to full screen strategic level and a zoomed in tactical level. Slopes are shown using hachures. Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and Commander type units with strengths given in men are available for orders issued every 20 minutes in simulated game time. It can take as little as 2 hours to play, but you may wish to take a weekend and make your decisions with care. There are 9 different speeds of resolution that can be selected. Most important of all "NAPOLEON THE EMPEROR" is shareware and you get to try it out before deciding to part with any money. Even then at $25 (U.S.) and Shipping & Handling the game is good value. "NAPOLEON THE EMPEROR" is a production of Reality Engine Computer Games. You should have a monitor and video card capable of at least 640X480 resolution (800X600+ is better) and showing 256 or more colors to play the game.
