Rogue's Quest is a single-player dungeon game currently being developed for the Windows environment. An astute observer will notice that it has been unmistakenably influenced by the classic game, Rogue, and its many descendents. Whereas these rogue-like games use a DOS character-based interface, Rogue's Quest makes full use of the Windows graphical user interface. Some features of Rogue's Quest include: * graphical representations of creatures and items * user-editable dungeons * a customizable toolbar * dragging and dropping of items in pack or armor slots * automapping 2) WHAT'S NEW FOR THIS VERSION? - size of the main view can be changed via Setup:Playspace dialog box (useful if your display resolution is greater than 640x480). - scroll bars have been removed from the main view. - new creatures: vampire, vampire lord, giant spider. - new amulets: protection, poison resistance, strangulation. - new rings: protection, poison resistance. - new spell: remove curse (also available as cheat code "removecurse") - generated armor and weapons may sometimes have bonuses (+'s) or penalties (-'s) and even be cursed. - merchant's algorithm for item pricing now takes into account whether an item is cursed or blessed and whether it has bonuses or penalties. - carry capacity is now enforced: load < maxload : "unencumbered" maxload < load < 2*maxload : "burdened" - speed is penalized 2*maxload < load : "overloaded" - unable to move - status bar displays the number of moves - merchants will not cross doorways (so they'll stay in their shops!) - many areas that once used a hard-coded gray color now use the Windows system colors for 3-D objects. - dungeon editor supports password protection for dungeon files. 3) ABOUT THIS PREVIEW PROGRAM The preview program for Rogue's Quest is completely informal and is open to everyone. (The program has been previously referred to as a beta program and even downgraded to an alpha program at one time.) While comments and suggestions are welcomed by the author, you are under *no* obligation to send any feedback. (If you do write, the author is especially curious about how you found out about Rogue's Quest...) Please do not hesitate to report any bugs that you might come across. The eventual goal is to offer Rogue's Quest as shareware and to charge no more than $20-$30US for the registered version. The author is working on Rogue's Quest in his spare time, so it will undoubtedly be quite some time before it will be ready for release. 4) RESULTS OF THE 1.0E SURVEY A surprising number of people responded to the survey included with Rogue's Quest 1.0e: - most people are playing Rogue's Quest under Windows 3.x on 486 machines and are not interested in a 32-bit version of Rogue's Quest. - the "monsters" that people most want to see implemented next are actually other characters -- mages, rogues, whatever -- just as long as they can wield weapons and/or cast spells. - most people apparently didn't really try the dungeon editor out much (which is understandable because it still needs a lot of work!) 5) WHERE TO FIND THE LATEST VERSION New versions of Rogue's Quest should be available roughly every two months (at least that's the current plan). The most up-to-date version can always be obtained via anonymous FTP at: ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/pw/pwung/ or ftp://users.aol.com/roguequest/ The above sites (especially Netcom) usually experience heavy traffic, so an alternative site to try is: ftp://ftp.win.tue.nl/pub/games/rogue_quest/ This last site is the rogue-like games site maintained by Boudewijn Wayers, who in the past has been kind enough to carry Rogue's Quest at the site (and who perhaps might continue to do so in the future). 6) HOW TO UNINSTALL ROGUE'S QUEST To uninstall Rogue's Quest: a) Delete all the files and subdirectories under the Rogue's Quest directory (\RQUEST by default). b) Delete RQ10F.INI and RQDE10F.INI in your Windows directory. c) Delete the Rogue's Quest items and group from Program Manager.
