WHAT IS PAINTBAll?? In less than a decade, the sport of Paintball has become recognized as one of the world's most exciting outdoor participation sports. Paintball is played in over two dozen countries by millions of men and women of all ages and life styles. Whether homemakers or high-school students, professionals or retirees, all paintball players share in a love for adventure and a strong competitive spirit. Paintball is a combination of childhood "tag" and "hide & seek" but is much more challenging and sophisticated. Although there are many different game formats, typically a group of players will divide into two teams to play "Capture the flag." The number of players on a team can vary from 4 or 5 to as many as 8 to 9 hundred on a side, limited only by the size of the playing field. The object of the game is to go out and capture the other team's flag while protecting your own. While you are tring to capture a flag you also try to eliminate opposing players by tagging them with a Paintball expelled from a special C02 or air-powered paintgun. Games usually have a time limit of 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the field and the number of players. Between games players take a break to check their equipment, reload paintballs and refresh themselves with food and drink while they recount the thrills of victory and the usually funny agonies of defeat. Win or Lose, everyone has a good time and their's always the next one waiting for you. A paintball is a round, thin-skinned gelatin capsule with colored liquid inside it. Paintballs are very similar to large round vitamin capsules or bath oil beads. The fill inside paintballs is non-toxic, non-caustic, water-soluble and biodegradable. It rinses out of clothing and off skin with mild soap and water. Paintballs come in a rainbow of colors: blue, pink, white, orange, red, yellow and other bright hues. When a paintball tags a player the thin gelatin skin splits open, and the liquid inside leaves a bright "paint" mark. A player who is marked is eliminated from the game. Paintguns come in a variety of shapes and styles. Some are small paint- pistols, powered by little 12-gram CO2 cartridges that have to be changed after 15 to 25 shots. Other paintguns are riffle-like, with shoulder stocks and longer barrels. These are often powered by larger, refilable 20 oz. CO2 cylinders that supply hundreds of shots. Some paintguns function as pump- actions, where each time you shoot you must cock the paintguns by using a barrel-mounted pump. Some paintguns are semi-automatic, where you just pull the trigger to shoot and the paintgun reloads and cocks without the need for pumping. Paintguns range from simple to sophisticated with volocity ranging from 150 fps to 450 fps. For safety, paintball players always must wear approved goggles to protect their eyes during a game and while in other areas where shooting is permitted such as a target range. Paintball is a very safe sport as saftey rules are followed and enforced. Insurance statistics indicate that paintball is safer than golf, jogging, tennis, swimming and many other sports. Referees on the field start and stop games, enforce the rules of the play, and control the sports safety. Most fields have a large staff of referees and run several games at the same time on different parts of their play site. Paintball also is played in areas for spectator enjoyment. Paintball is a sport played by people from all professions and lifestyles. It is a sport where men and women compete equally, and where age is not dominated by youth. Physical size and strengh are not as important as intelligence and determination. Like a game of chess, being able to think quickly and decisively is what makes you a pro. Paintball also is a character building sport. Players learn the importence of teamwork and gain self-confidence while developing leadership abilities. But, above all, paintball is fun! it's a chance to shake the burden of life's responsibilit- ies and rekindle your spirit of adventure.
