LANtastic Network Operating System Version 5 Compatibility Bulletin Product Reviewed: AccPac Plus v6.1A /LanPak 6.0A Classification: Accounting Software Date: 04/09/1993 (ACCPLUS.DOC) Engineer: JHC -------------------------------- Compatibility Statement ACCPAC Plus Windowing System Manager v6.1A/LanPak 6.0A and accounting modules have been tested as compatible with LANtastic version 5.xx. Product Overview The ACCPAC Plus accounting software system consists of the Windowing System Manager, LanPak units (for network activation and support) and a complete selection of accounting modules, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger, Inventory Control, Job Costing, Order Entry, Payroll, Retail Invoicing and Sales Analysis. Installation The installation of ACCPAC Plus begins with the installation of the Windowing System Manager (WSM) and is accomplished from floppy disks at a PC configured as a LANtastic server. The CONFIG.SYS should have files specified as: FILES=250 DOS SHARE should be run before the LANtastic network is started with the recommended parameters: SHARE /F:10000 /L:250 Login to the server and redirect a drive letter that will be available to all workstations that will access the WSM. For this bulletin the drive letter E: will be used. When ACCPAC is installed, a series of directories and files are created in the root directory. If security is a concern or you do not wish users to have access to the entire root, you may install ACCPAC in a sub directory which has been redirected (or substituted) with a drive designation, as follows: MkDir \ACCPAC Use NET_MGR and define a LANtastic resource named ACCPAC which references the just created \ACCPAC directory. NET LOGIN \\ NET USE E: \\ From the E> prompt, install WSM by typing A:INSTALL (or B:INSTALL). Once installed, WSM will automatically display a menu with an option to Install Programs. Install individual accounting modules and LanPak(s) using this menu option. Notes on Installing LanPak(s) LanPak is the multi-user licensing and network activation module. Each LanPak disk contains four (4) Network Units. You cannot install one LanPak disk twice. Refer to the LanPak manual to determine the number of Network Units required for your configuration. During the installation of each LanPak, the WSM will prompt the following questions: Have you read the README.TXT file? --- answer yes if so Are you installing on a Novell Network? --- answer no When activating the WSM for the network, the Network Activator first compares module version numbers then displays a message confirming compatibility. The system will then prompt you to activate the WSM. Select Yes to continue, and the Network Activator will appear. The status should indicate that the network units on this disk have not been installed. Next, a Host Network scroll box will appear. Press the up arrow key and enter LANtastic v5 in the entry field. Select yes to confirm the network name. A message will indicate that activation of the network is in process. After installation, the status will show that 4 Network Units have been installed and the Host Network field is LANtastic v5. Additional LanPak product disks may be installed at this time repeating the same steps as outlined above. Installing ACCPAC Plus Products From the WSM "Install Products" option, insert the "Product One" disk of the accounting module (Order Entry, Accounts Payable, etc.) you are installing, and select Continue from the prompt. Follow the prompts to insert additional disks if necessary. Workstation Configuration After installation of ACCPAC Plus on the server, configure each workstation (and server if it will be used as a workstation) as follows: Configuring Workstation Names The Workstation Name identifies each workstation to other users on the network. To give each workstation a unique name, the workstation must first be assigned its own option directory. This can be accomplished through the DOS SET command: SET plususer = d:\pathname where d:\pathname is the drive and directory containing the user options. This can also be accomplished by starting WSM with the "/u" switch; PLUS /ud:\pathname. Copy \ASP\EZUSEROP.LD4 from the server to each of the workstation's options directory. Once this has been done, the Workstation Name may be changed in WSM by pressing F3 followed by selecting Workstation Name. Each user name must be unique. This process can be repeated to customize separate Printer lists, Start lists, Currency and Exchange Rate tables and system options for each person or work group on the network. Please refer to the "Create Printer Lists, Start Lists, and Options for Workgroups" section from Administration on page 4-4 in the LanPak manual for more information on these customizations. ACCPAC should be activated from the same redirected drive on each workstation. For example: NET LOGIN \\ NET USE E: \\ E: PLUS Configuring a workstation using PROFILE.LD4 The PROFILE.LD4 file contains configuration information for each workstation, including support for remote access, customizing network drive designations and limiting the number of open ACCPAC windows a user may access. Customizing Network Drives: When installing ACCPAC, it is recommended that each user use the same drive designation to access ACCPAC. However, if your users do require different drive designations, this can be accomplished by creating unique PROFILE.LD4 files. Perform the following: 1. Copy the \ASP\PROFILE.LD4 file from the server to the root of the workstation. 2. Set a DOS PATH to the location of the local PROFILE.LD4 file on the workstation so the system will know which .LD4 file to reference. 3. Edit the workstation PROFILE.LD4 file: The file will contain at least two pieces of information (the defaults are listed): \ASP (The location of the \ASP directory on the server) 10 (The number of windows that workstation can have open) Edit the file so that the first line reads X:\ASP where X: is the redirected drive designation to the server's ACCPAC directory. For example, if this user has issued a command such as NET USE F: \\\ACCPAC, the first line should be changed to F:\ASP. Limiting the Windows Access An ACCPAC user may access more than one window simultaneously and 'swap' between them. In this manner each accounting module is considered an active window. The maximum number of windows which can be open is ten. This number is reflected in the second line of the PROFILE.LD4. This value may be lowered for performance reasons. Multi-User Access Be sure to load the DOS SHARE program on all LANtastic servers containing shared data bases. By creating workstation names, one can display ACCPAC's network activity by pressing F3 for System Manager and select Network Status. This gives the user an option to display the ACCPAC workstations and the last database conflict (program conflict). Report Printing Printer connections may be established either locally or over the network. For network printing, issue the NET USE command in DOS before beginning ACCPAC. For example: Net Use LPT1 \\\@PRINTER Printing Problems - Local If your program will not print to a local printer, exit from ACCPAC and confirm that the local port (LPT1...) has not been redirected across the network (this can be done using the LANtastic NET SHOW command). Print through DOS to confirm the connection. If you can print through DOS but not through ACCPAC, select the report you wish to print and press F3 for System Manager, and P for Printer Configuration. Make sure the designation is set to Printer and check the printer driver. The printer driver selected must be the driver which corresponds to that printer. Check all options/ports for that driver and try again. If you are still unable to print, the driver you have configured may be incorrect and you may wish to review your printer manual or contact Computer Associates for the corresponding driver configuration. Printing Problems - Network If your program will not print to a network printer, exit from ACCPAC and confirm that you can print through the network to the network printer. If you can not, check your printer redirection and time-out, and make sure the server's network queue is active. Once you are able to print through the network, follow the steps above in attempting to print through ACCPAC. Running ACCPAC with Expanded Memory Managers ACCPAC will utilize expanded memory if available on your system. When it is installed, the initial introductory screen will display the amount of expanded memory available. ACCPAC uses this expanded memory to optimize certain functions, such as a memory resident search.
