Product Overview Approach for Windows is a standalone relational data base designed to help manage, analyze and report on information. Features include: * No programming required to design forms, letters, labels and reports. * Work directly with a variety of different popular data base file formats including dBASE III and IV, FoxPro, Paradox, and Oracle. * Exchange information in different formats. Installation The installation of Approach for Windows is accomplished from floppy disks. At a PC configured as a LANtastic server, start Windows, insert the Approach for Windows installation disk #1 in the drive and invoke the RUN command . In the RUN command box type: :SETUP .EXE Complete the installation by answering the setup prompts. A program group containing the Approach icon will be created for you. Note that running the DOS file locking program SHARE is required in order for Approach to provide data base locking on the network. SHARE should be run on any LANtastic server which will be accessed by Approach. Workstation Configuration After installation of Approach on the server, configure each workstation as follows: From Windows, assign an available letter drive and Login to the Approach server if not previously done: o Click on "File Manager" o Click on "Disk" o Click on "Network Connections" o Fill in New Connection box and click on "Connect" This connection can also be accomplished by using LANtastic for Windows. Create a new Program Item and reference the correct drive letter and directory where Approach was installed. Click on "OK". The Approach icon will appear representing the new program item. Security Security may become an issue when sharing data among multiple users on a network. Password protection can be imposed on data base files and Approach views. For full detail, refer to Chapter 9 in the Approach "Users Guide". Multi-User Access Be sure to load the DOS SHARE program on all LANtastic servers containing shared data bases. Approach uses a combination of file and record locking to allow multiple simultaneous access and updates of data files. If two users are simultaneously modifying the same data record, one of the users will receive a non-fatal error message and the option of overwriting the most recent changes to the same record. Data bases may also be opened in exclusive mode to prevent more than one update at a time. Report Printing Printer connections may be established either though Windows or Approach. You may also issue the NET USE command in DOS before beginning Windows. For example: Net Use LPT1 \\\@PRINTER Network Disconnects If a network disconnect occurs but the connection is reestablished before NetBIOS time-out, the application recovers completely. After time-out, however, the application will fail with the error message "System Error. Cannot read from Drive x: Cancel/Retry". Attempt to reconnect by clicking on the Retry button. If this fails, click on the Cancel button and reconnect to the disconnected drive manually by using the Windows File manager.
