LANtastic Network Operating System v5.0 Compatibility Bulletin Product Reviewed: CacheAll v1.0 from C&D Programming Classification: Disk/File Utilities Date: 4/14/93 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ COMPATIBILITY STATEMENT C&D Programming's CacheAll Version 1.0 is compatible with LANtastic NOS v4.xx and v5.xx. PRODUCT OVERVIEW CacheAll is a disk-caching program which can cache all DOS compatible devices accessible through a drive letter, including local hard disks, network'ed drives, CD-ROM drives, WORM drives, etc. 3 types of memory configurations are supported: extended, XMS and EMS. You can also use your local hard drive as additional cache memory. By default, CacheAll only caches files which are open with Deny Write or Exclusive sharing privileges. It is designed for speeding up read operations on the workstation side, whereas the LANtastic LANCache caches the local physical disk drives and is geared towards write operations on servers. INSTALLATION: If you are installing CacheAll on a LANtastic server for use by various workstations, you should complete the following steps: 1. Install the CacheAll program onto a LANtastic server by running the CacheAll INSTALL program from the distribution diskette. The installation program will automatically create the program directory, C:\CACHEALL by default. 2. Set up a sharable resource (e.g. \\SERVER\CACHEALL) on the server with default Access Control List (ACL) using NET_MGR. No special ACL's are necessary. 3. Set up LANtastic Group and/or Individual accounts with correct privileges using NET_MGR. No special privileges are necessary. No special workstation installation is needed. You can just log onto the CacheAll server, redirect a drive to point to the appropriate resource and run the CacheAll program. CONFIGURATION: CacheAll must be executed after all components of the LANtastic network have been started, especially REDIR and SERVER. During our testing, we did not find any problems with CacheAll co-existing with LANCache on the same machine. The minimum amount of memory required by CacheAll is 18K and it can be loaded high. CacheAll has many command line options to configure its performance and memory usage. Refer to the documentation for a listing of all options. NETWORK DISCONNECTS Network disconnects produce the same type of errors that DOS produces. For example, if P: is a cached network drive, a disconnect will produce the following error message: Server connection to network node NODE01 broken reading drive P Abort, Retry, Fail?
