LANtastic Network Operating System Version 5 Compatibility Bulletin Product Reviewed: MaynStream for Windows v3.1 Classification: Tape Backup Software Date: 03/15/1993 Engineer: JHC Compatibility Statement Maynard MaynStream for Windows v3.1 has been tested as compatible with LANtastic versions 4.xx and 5.xx. Product Overview The Maynard family of tape backup systems are designed for fast reliable backup storage of local and network hard disk drives. Tests were conducted using a Maynard 525Q (525 MB) tape drive and Maynard 16 bit SCSI interface card. The tape backup software can only be used on the machine where the tape drive has been installed, therefore, to backup a disk drive on another machine in the network (redirected drive) requires that the remote PC must be running the LANtastic SERVER program. Installing MaynStream for Windows The installation of the MaynStream backup software is accomplished from floppy disks. At the PC where the tape drive is installed, start Windows, insert the MaynStream installation disk #1 in the drive and invoke the RUN command . In the RUN command box type: :SETUP .EXE Complete the installation by answering the setup prompts. A Windows group containing MaynStream icons will be created for you. Configuration After installation, restart Windows and perform the following steps: Double click on the MaynStream group icon then the MaynStream application icon to start the backup program. Click on the SETTINGS menu bar and verify the following: Backup Set the Skip Open Files radio button to YES. Network Set the Display radio button to Mapped unless you are using LANtastic for NetWare. Note that running the DOS file locking program SHARE is required in order for the tape backup software to detect and report open files. SHARE should be run on any LANtastic server which will backed up across the network. Tape Backup Operation Two operational modes are supported. Interactive Interactive backup is started by double clicking on the MaynStream application icon. Redirected drives appear as local drive icons. Backing up a disk drive located on a remote system from a LANtastic workstation requires only to select the required drive or directories then click on the backup icon. Automatic To automatically backup disks at a prearranged time, create backup Jobs using the interactive application, then schedule the jobs to run using MaynStream launcher. Open File Conflicts During the backup process, any open files are bypassed but are noted in a status log. At the termination of the backup session, the user may optionally review the log to determine which, if any, files were omitted from the backup. Prior to backing up a disk drive containing the LANtastic control directory, save the contents of the directory in a backup file by entering at the DOS prompt: NET_MGR Backup C:\LANtasti.net This can only be done without SERVER loaded. During the backup procedure, LANtasti.net control directory files remain open and therefore are skipped unless specifically excluded from the backup file selection. Network Disconnects If there is a network disconnect during the backup procedure, an error box "Network Error on Drive. C(ancel) or R(etry)" is displayed. When the connection is re-established, the current file being backed up will be flagged as corrupt Version History 09/18/1993: MaynStream for Windows v3.1 tested for compatibility with LANtastic v4.1. 03/15/1993: MaynStream for Windows v3.1 tested for compatibility with LANtastic v5.0.
