Compatibility Statement R2LAN is compatible with LANtastic NOS v4.xx. Product Overview R2LAN provides full-featured remote control services for NetBIOS or IPX LANs. It can also be used in conjunction with Remote2, also from DCA/Crosstalk, in order to access workstations on a LAN from a separate site, although this specific configuration has not been tested by Artisoft. Both text and graphics mode screens can be viewed across the LAN, but remote mouse control is not supported. The host program supports only one viewer, so group viewing/broadcasting is not possible, except through daisy chaining. Test Equipment Configuration The following machines were used for R2LAN testing. All machines have VGA adapters installed and use Artisoft AE-2 NICs. Testing was completed using LANtastic NOS v4.0 with AILANBIO.EXE and AE2.EXE v2.03. Machines running as LANtastic peer servers are designated by (S). - CompuAdd 333: 386DX/33, DOS 5.0 (S) - Altima 2: 286/16 portable, LCD VGA, DOS 4.01 - Northgate 386: 386DX/20, DOS 5.0 (S) Product Installation Notes An installation routine is provided and is fairly simple and self explanatory. It copies the program and data files to the desired hard disk directory and sets up initial user and host names. Product Execution Notes The R2LAN host requires 70K of RAM overhead, but may be loaded into upper memory with DOS 5.0, if enough is available. Once loaded, the host will only accept connections from guests who it has on list of authorized users, which requires some overhead during setup time if there are many users who will access the host. User passwords can also be set, providing further security. The R2LAN manager program (R2LMGR.EXE) is provided for defining new user accounts and customizing the host setup parameters after installation. The guest program, R2LCALL.EXE, runs as a DOS application or a 155K TSR. It supports both text and graphics viewing, but updates of VGA graphics images is much slower than other products in this class. Many other services are also provided by the guest program, including file transfer, host screen snapshots, host keyboard enable/disable, and host video enable/disable. Compatibility Notes No incompatibilities with LANtastic NOS were discovered, however, when a Windows 3.0 screen is viewed by R2LCALL the host's screen becomes corrupted as the mouse is moved around. This does not seem to affect the operation of Windows or Windows applications, but is a somewhat troublesome side effect of R2LAN.
