TECHNICAL BULLETIN 04.25.90 MACOL401 JCR (updated 8.13.90) ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE: Macola 3.13/4.01, Macola Inc. Installing Macola Install the System Manager (S/M) using the install program found on the Installation Utility disk. Insert the disk in floppy drive and at the floppy drive prompt, run INSTALL. The system will then prompt you for installation parameters - such as the drive designation you are installing from and to. The next menu will provide a selection for installing Macola products; for the first time installation select #1 to install S/M. Follow the prompts to insert the S/M disks. After the S/M has been installed, you may install other Macola products by selecting item #2 on that menu. If you are installing a "live" version of Macola and the install process did not prompt for a Registration Disk, you may select item #6 from this menu to install that disk. NOTE: This installation should be done on the server, to a physical device (ie C or D) designation. Configuration During the installation, all files are configured within a \MACOLA directory. You should now create a resource on the Server for this directory, with the physical link path of X:\MACOLA (where X: is the physical drive designation, C: or D: that Macola was installed on). That resource should have default privileges. Log into the Server, share the Macola resource, and from the redirected drive issue a MACOLA X command to load Macola, where X is either C for color monitor or M for monochrome monitor. From the menu, select F3 FILE UTILITIES and select item #3 Company File Maintenance. The system will then prompt you for configuration information. On item #7 Version, select F DOS 3.x Network Full (this includes print spooling, file and record locking). Follow the prompts and respond accordingly (Y/N) to all other Macola products installed. The system will then prompt you for SYSTEM UTILITIES and PRINT SPOOLING DEFAULTS information. For our in house testing, the default was selected on all options with the following exceptions/ notes: 1. We recommend to tell Macola NOT to spool reports to disk; they should be spooled directly to the printer (in this case, LANtastic will redirect those reports through the printer spooler). 2. Tell Macola that the reports should be spooled to a network printer. 3. The number of local printers and the default local printer # did not have an effect on the function of printing through Macola. We selected 3 local printers and tried a variety of default printers. The printer codes tested were #1, no printer fonts defined, #2, Epson Compressed. Hardware Requirements Macola does not require a large number set for FILES= and BUFFERS= in the config.sys file. Their initial recommendation is FILES=50, BUFFERS=30. Once Macola has been installed and configured, the server user or any other node may log into the server, share the server's root drive and any necessary printing devices, and run Macola from the redirected drive. Avoiding Problems Network Operation If you are experiencing difficulties running Macola with LANtastic, check to make sure that Macola has been installed for F (DOS 3.X Network-Full). Check the version of Macola running, it should be either 3.13 or 4.01. Macola 4.00 does not work properly with LANtastic. If you are running 4.00, contact Macola for an upgrade to 4.01. Printing Problems If the system is not printing, make sure the user has net used the appropriate printing device, make sure that user is spooling printing requests to a network printer instead of to disk (refer to Macola configuration above), and check the network printer timeout. At the DOS prompt, the command NET SHOW will display that workstation status. If the value of the printer timeout is 0, assign a new timeout by entering the following command: NET LPT TIMEOUT 10 (Where 10 is the actual number of seconds before the timeout occurs. The value may be decreased or increased according to print job length. A value of 10 seconds was sufficient during in house testing with Macola). This command must be entered on each workstation which will print across the network, and may be added to the initial start up batch file which loads your network drivers. Please refer to your network documentation for more information on printer timeout. Comments Macola 3.13 and 4.01 have been tested in house with the LANtastic NOS 2.57 and 3.0, and have been added to our compatibility list. Macola 4.00 has been tested in house as incompatible with LANtastic NOS 2.57 and 3.00 and has been added to our list as incompatible. Macola has confirmed the content and accuracy of this document.
