*** Welcome to rec.music.info! *** Welcome to rec.music.info, a group that aims to provide a noise-free source of information and news for the entire rec.music hierarchy. Two introductory articles about rec.music.info are posted to the group and to news.answers/rec.answers each month. You are now reading the first article, which explains what rec.music.info is, and answers some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's). The second article is titled "Submission Guidelines", and you only need to read it if you want to submit an article to rec.music.info. By the way: many periodic or FAQ articles, including this one, are available for anonymous ftp on the archive site rtfm.mit.edu [18.172.1.27] in the directory pub/usenet/news.answers. The name under which a FAQ is archived appears is the one that appears in the 'Archive-name' line at the top of the article. The FAQ you are now reading is archived as music/rec-music-info/welcome. If you can't do or don't know about ftp: there's also a mail server on that machine. Just send a e-mail message to mail-server@pit-manager.mit.edu containing the word "help" in the body of the message. --- What is the purpose of rec.music.info? The purpose or charter of r.m.info is to provide the Usenet community with a resource for information, news, and facts about any and all things musical. All the other rec.music groups are intended for discussions and general chit chat about music. Rec.music.info will contain informational, factual articles only. Followups are redirected to an appropriate other group, and further discussion (if any) will not take place in r.m.info. In order to ensure that r.m.info contains only appropriate articles, it was decided to create the group as a moderated newsgroup. --- Eh, what is a 'followup', and what does 'moderated' mean? If you are new to Usenet and are not familiar with the terminology, you might want to read the general introductory articles found in the newsgroup news.announce.newusers. Doing so will make your life on the net much easier, and will probably save you from making silly beginner's mistakes. If you think that at this moment you are reading an echo, a conference, or a bboard, I'd also strongly suggest a trip over to news.announce.newusers. For the rest of this article, I will assume you have a basic knowledge of Usenet terminology and mechanics. --- OK, so now I know what 'moderated' means. Tell me more. Rec.music.info is a moderated newsgroup, which means that all articles submitted to the group will have to be approved by the moderator first. The current moderator of the group (and the author of this article) is Leo Breebaart. Submissions to r.m.info as well as comments, criticisms, suggestions or questions about the group can either be directly posted to rec.music.info, or e-mailed to: rec-music-info@cp.tn.tudelft.nl But before you do so, please be sure to check out the "Submission Guidelines" article. The influence of the moderator is minimal and of an administrative nature, consisting chiefly of weeding out obviously inappropriate articles, while making sure correct headers etc. are used for the appropriate ones. --- Why does every article subject start with a capitalized word? The subject of every article posted to r.m.info starts with a special keyword. This will enable people to automatically select or kill entire categories of information that they are/are not interested in. Because of the keyword scheme we do not need separate newsgroups for e.g. chart listings, or for concert dates, or for discographies. --- What are the keywords, and what do they mean? At the moment there are 9 broad categories of rec.music.info articles. New keywords will be added whenever necessary. ADMIN: Words of wisdom from the moderator. Used for newsgroup-related information and administratrivia only. For messages that get crossposted to other groups (like the one you are reading right now), I will use the less confusing REC.MUSIC.INFO: keyword. CHART: 'Top ' lists from all over the world, usually posted periodically. Considered worthless trivia by many folks, charts are nonetheless hugely popular with even more people, so they make up a significant amount of r.m.info contents. DISCOGRAPHY: Discographies for recording artists in any genre. CONCERT: Tour schedules, special appearances, festival line-ups, this season's list of Boston Philharmonic performances -- you get the picture. RELEASE: Announcements of new music releases. NEWS: "Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, died this weekend." MAILINGLIST: Announcements and information pertaining to any of the existing musical mailing lists. FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions articles. INFO: Catch-all category for information that is useful but does not fit any of the above categories. Examples: "List of good classical record shops in Amsterdam", "Ftp site for Michael Jackson-related material established". --- Why don't you use genre related keywords like CLASSICAL or ROCK? 1] Because I want to refrain from making things needlessly complex, both for myself and for the readers. 2] Because the categories in rec.music.info are ideally supposed to transcend the separation of the individual newsgroups. I have no desire to mirror the subdivision of the rec.music hierarchy in rec.music.info. --- What type of material is considered inappropriate? There are three broad categories of articles which will be rejected by the moderator: 1] Requests for information: rec.music.info is strictly a one-way street. You people send me information; I then post it to r.m.info. Requests for specific information belong in the normal newsgroups. If your request gets answered, you might consider passing the answer on to r.m.info, though. 2] Reviews: there already is a dedicated, moderated newsgroup for musical reviews: rec.music.reviews. All reviews should go there. 3] Commercial stuff: this is a vague category. "Me and my buddies have just released our first CD" would probably still be accepted, but "We are looking for a guitarist" would be rejected. Rec.music.marketplace is the best place for "things/persons wanted" and "things/persons offered" articles. --- Will the material appearing in rec.music.info be archived somewhere? Yes. David Datta has generously donated space on his music FTP archive site for a rec.music.info archive. You can reach the archive by ftp'ing to cs.uwp.edu (131.210.1.4), and going to the directory /pub/music/info. Effectively this means that anything you post to rec.music.info will be permanently stored, so your work will not be lost. --- Will rec.music.info be just another rock/pop oriented group? I have only one answer to this: "not if I can help it". Unfortunately, that *is* more or less happening to e.g. rec.music.reviews -- very few classical or country or new age reviews appear there. Regular readers from all the music groups on Usenet are hereby invited to [a] give me ideas and feedback on how to make r.m.info interesting and valuable to them as well (e.g. new keywords I did not think of); to [b] scan their newsgroups for appropriate material and point the authors to the direction of rec.music.info, and to [c] submit interesting articles themselves. -- Leo Breebaart -- Moderator rec.music.info Submissions & other mail to: rec-music-info @ cp.tn.tudelft.nl !!! Requests for information do *not* belong in r.m.info! !!! --- ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Subject: REC.MUSIC.INFO: Submission Guidelines for rec.music.info Archive-name: music/rec-music-info/guidelines Last-modified: 1993/02/08 22:38:03 Version: 1.12 *** rec.music.info - Submission Guidelines and Etiquette *** Two introductory articles about rec.music.info are posted to this group and to news.answers each month. You are now reading the second article, which explains how to submit something to rec.music.info, and which answers some Frequently Asked Questions about the submission process. The first article is titled "Welcome to rec.music.info", and it might be a good idea to check it out as well. The FAQ you are now reading is archived as music/rec-music-info/guidelines. If you can't do or don't know about ftp: there's also a mail server on that machine. Just send a e-mail message to mail-server@pit-manager.mit.edu containing the word "help" in the body of the message. --- How do I submit something to rec.music.info? Two possibilities. You can use your newsreading software to just post the article to rec.music.info, as you would do with any other newsgroup. The difference is that the software recognizes the special status of r.m.info as a moderated group, and will e-mail your article to me, the moderator, instead of posting it to the group. Alternatively, you can mail your article directly to me at the following address: rec-music-info @ cp.tn.tudelft.nl Mailing me directly is probably (a wee bit) faster, but using the transparency offered by the newsreading software is probably more convenient. --- How soon will I see my article appear? It depends on how busy I am. Your article reaches me as mail, I have to read it first, possibly edit it, give it the stamp of approval, and finally send it on to the group. I try to check and process the rec-music-info mailbox at least twice a day. Since my site is in the Netherlands, the turnaround time between submitting something from, say, the USA and seeing it appear in rec.music.info on your site might be a bit longer than with groups moderated from within States. --- Should my article be in a specific format? No. If it is not totally illegible, I will accept it, and if it does not have a correct subject-line I will correct it -- that's what a moderator is for. However. You could do me a big favour by making sure your article confirms to these simple requirements: [1] A good, descriptive Subject line, with the appropriate keyword already included (see the first article for the set of keywords). See also the next section. [2] Include some background information to your article. One paragraph or even one sentence can be enough. Just don't forget that r.m.info is read by people who do not know all the context that your usual audience over in rec.music.whatever takes for granted. [3] Always mention what source you got the information from. [4] Don't forget to include a Followup-To header, at least if you don't want further discussion to automatically be forwarded to rec.music.misc, which is the default. As I said: if your article is appropriate I will post it even if you don't follow these guidelines, but then don't blame me for not processing it immediately. 'Perfect' articles I can send on with just two keystrokes. Stuff that needs editing is going to have to wait until I have time to do so. --- Anything else about Subject lines? Yes. If you are submitting a CONCERT article, please put the geographic location of those concerts in square brackets at the end of the Subject, like so: CONCERT: Trafassi Tour Dates [UK + Japan] If you are submitting a chart, please include the period the chart is valid for, e.g: CHART: Zimbabwe Top 40, 24/08/92 --- What about crossposting? If you send something to rec.music.info, just name any group you'd like to crosspost to in the Newsgroups field. Then, when I approve the article for rec.music.info it will get automatically crossposted to any other groups mentioned. Ideally, everyone subscribing to a rec.music group will also read rec.music.info, so crossposting would be unnecessary and redundant. On the other hand: crossposts do not take up extra space; modern newsreaders can be configured to show you crossposted articles only once anyway; not everybody reads rec.music.info; and rec.music.info was never meant to reduce the volume of the regular newsgroups. You decide. --- And Follow-ups? If the only newsgroup you have specified is rec.music.info, then the Followup-To: field will always be set to rec.music.misc. If you do not want this, you must supply a Followup-To line of your own, and I will honor that one. If you specify newsgroups to crosspost to, then the Followup-To field will be set to include all the crossposted groups, excepting rec.music.info itself. Again, if you do not wish this behaviour, supply your own Followup-To line. --- Other Header lines? This is where things get a bit technical. For my moderation purposes I use a shell script to process the submissions I get. This shell script automatically extracts the following set of 'standard' header lines (if present): From, Subject, Newsgroups, Summary, Keywords, Organization, Reply-To, and Followup-To. All other header lines are discarded. If you have any special header lines that you want included in your article as it will appear in rec.music.info, you can do this by separating them from the other header lines in your article by one blank line. That way, they are regarded by my script as part of the message instead of the headers, and will be passed along. If you have no such special wishes, or if you did not quite follow the above two paragraphs, you can forget about them completely; you don't have to bother with *any* of the header lines. Just send me your submission. --- Why have I received no reply from you? I never reject anything in silence, and I make a point of it to answer all my mail. However, e-mail can and does get lost, every now and again. So, if you send me something, and you don't see it appear it rec.music.info, and you still have not heard from me in reply after say, one week, you can be pretty sure that either your mail never reached me, or that my asnwer has never reached you. In that case, please try again. ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ *** rec.music.info - List of Internet Musical Resources *** This forthnightly posted list of resources is maintained by the current rec.music.info moderator, Leo Breebaart, who can be reached at rec-music-info@cp.tn.tudelft.nl. These groups can be divided into four categories: moderated rec.music groups, unmoderated rec.music groups, alt groups and 'other' groups. Groups in the 'alt' hierarchy are 'unofficial' in that they are not created by standard Usenet voting procedures. Therefore, some sites prefer not to carry (all) of the alt newsgroups. 'Other' groups are those groups that do not reside in the rec.music or alt hierarchy, but which nevertheless might be of interest, musically. Here follows a brief description of each of these newsgroups. An '[FAQ]' behind the group name means that for this group a so-called Frequently Asked Questions article is maintained, which you really should read before attempting to post to the group in question. --- Moderated Groups -- rec.music.reviews Reviews of albums, singles, movies, books, concerts -- anything as long as it has to do with music.
