          Welcome  to PackSort !   This utility is  for system operators of
          the  QuickBBS 2.7x bulletin board systems.  It will pack and sort
          your USERS.BBS data file.  Many options are available.


          Why PackSort ?
          ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß

          Remember  the  first time  you sorted  your USERS.BBS  ?   What a
          surprise  to  find out  that, if  you  used USERSORT.EXE,  it was
          sorted  by FIRSTNAME !  And just to add to the sinking feeling of
          <What's   wrong  here!>,   you  had   to  use   another  utility,
          USERPACK.EXE, to pack your USERS.BBS.

          Those days are over, now that PackSort is here.


          What is PackSort ?
          ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß

          Packsort will do both, pack and sort, and much much more !

          It  will pack  your users  data file,  deleting users  marked for
          removal.   You can  optionaly remove old  users, users that don't
          have  a valid security level or  that don't meet certain security
          flag attributes.

          It  will sort your users data file by first or last names, from A
          to  Z or Z  to A.  You  can have the SysOp  user record placed in
          first  position,  to  allow  the  'fast  sysop  logon'  option of
          QuickBBS.

          PackSort  can generate an  ASCII list of your  active users.  You
          could ZIP that file an make it available for download !

          Installing and using PackSort is very simple.


          Important notes
          ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß

          PackSort  was written  with one important  priority in  mind.  It
          should be near absolutely impossible to trash your USERS.BBS data
          file !

          To  do so, PackSort doesn't  use your USERS.BBS file  !  It first
          makes  work copies  of all necessary  files.   Then, all original
          files  are renamed as .BAK security  files.  Those work files are
          USERS.WRK,  ALIAS.WRK, COMBINED.WRK and  LASTREAD.WRK.  They will
          be removed before termination.

          Every input/output operation is checked for errors.  If something
          should go wrong, all the files are restored from the .BAK files.

                 >>>  PackSort is NOT share or multi-node aware <<<

          This  means that YOU  MUST NOT RUN PACKSORT  WHILE OTHER TASK CAN
          ACCESS  THE FOLLOWING FILES:   USERS.BBS, ALIAS.BBS, COMBINED.BBS
          and LASTREAD.BBS.


          Installation
          ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß

          Unpack the archive in a temporary directory.  If you haven't done
          so,  you should really  print all of the  USER'S GUIDE for easier
          reading.  It as been formatted to print at 60 lines per pages.

          Read the docs at least once !  Then, put PACKSORT.EXE in your bbs
          system directory.

          How to use PackSort

          PackSort  is run from the command line or from a batch file.  The
          executable  PACKSORT.EXE must  be in  your bbs  system directory.
          PackSort  has built  in default  behaviors, but  you can  give it
          arguments  that will  affect how  it will  deal with  your users.
          Those argurments are fully explained in chapter 3.

          Online  help is available.   Run PackSort with <?>  or <Help>.  A
          summary  of  available  commands  will be  displayed.    For more
          detailed  information on an option, run PackSort with the name of
          the option and <?> or <Help>.

          PackSort  accept  many command  line arguments.   They  are fully
          described in the following pages.

          PackSort  must reside  in your  bulletin board  system directory.
          Options are case insensitive, can be in any order and MUST NOT be
          preceded by -'s or /'s.  You cannot use an option more than once.

                    This  keyword  also determines  how  the users  will be
                    listed in the ASCII list.  Using {First} will result in
                    users being listed with their first name first.

          þ Remarks Some   bulletin  boards  allow  a  'fast  sysop  logon'
                    feature.  When you logon locally, the name of the first
                    user in the user data file will be automatically used.

                    By  default, the record with the highest security level
                    will  be put in first place.  Use this option if you do
                    not use this shortcut.

          þ Example PACKSORT NoSysOp


          Days <nb>

          þ Summary Delete old users.

          þ Remarks {Days}  must  be followed  by a  positive integer.   At
                    least  a space must be between  {Days} and <nb>.  Users
                    that haven't called in <nb> days will be deleted.

                    This  is useful to  only keep records  of active users.
                    The suggested value for <nb> is 90 days.

          þ Example PACKSORT Days 90


          MinSec <nb>

          þ Summary Delete users with security level less than <nb>.

          þ Remarks {MinSec}  must be followed  by a positive  integer.  At
                    least a space must be between {MinSec} and <nb>.  Users
                    whose  security  level  are  less  than  <nb>  will  be
                    deleted.

                    You  might want  to delete users  who haven't completed
                    their  access validations  on their  first visit.   For
                    instance,  if your 'call back verifier' gives new users
                    a  security level  of 10,  you would  delete users with
                    level less than 10.

          þ Remarks {FlagsOn}  must  be followed  by a  'flag string'.   At
                    least  a space  must be between  {FlagsOn} and <flags>.
                    The  'flag string' is  simply a list  of flags, WITH NO
                    SPACE BETWEEN THEM, that the user must have.

                    You  might  want  to delete  users  who  haven't gained
                    access  on their  first visit.   For  instance, if your
                    access validations give a new user the flags A1, B1 and
                    C3,  you could delete non-validated users with the line
                    given in the example.

          FlagsOff <flags>

                    SPACE BETWEEN THEM, that the user must NOT have.

                    Your   access  validation  might  not  set  flags  upon
                    validation,  but instead reset them.   For instance, if
                    your  access validations  resets a new  user's flags D1
                    and  D2, you could delete  non validated users with the
                    line given in the example.

          NewUsers <switches>

          þ Summary Set new users' attributes.

          þ Remarks {NewUsers}  must be followed by  a 'switch string'.  At
                    least   a   space  must   be  between   {NewUsers}  and
                    <switches>.   The 'switch  string' is simply  a list of
                    switches WITH NO SPACE BETWEEN THEM.

                    New  users will  often answer  incorrectly to important
                    logon  questions.  They will have troubles because they
                    answered  NO to ANSI color codes, full screen editor or
                    screen  clear codes.   You might want  to make sure new
                    users  have  those  settings correct,  but  still allow
                    experienced  users  to  configure those  options.   New
                    users  are users  with 5 or  less calls  to your board.
                    Only  those users will have their records updated.  The
                    switches are case insensitive :

                    C or c : Set 'screen clear codes' to ON
                    A or a : Set ANSI color codes to ON
                    E or e : Set ANSI full screen editor to ON
