VIRUSCAN(tm) 9.14v102 by McAfee Associates **** The ZIP TERMINUS was created to be run on a stand-alone PC. **** BACKGROUND INFORMATION: This program was designed to be a shell menu or front end for PKZIP(tm) and VIRUSCAN(tm). Most PKZIP v1.1 and v2.04x options are supported. One of the main objectives in writing this program was to reduce the amount of user input required each time a file is compressed or extracted. The ZIP TERMINUS specializes in 'FLAT ARCHIVES'. This program in no way attempts to facilitate EVERY archive option convention offered by PKZIP(tm). The ZIP TERMINUS offers a modest selection of computer virus detection options by interfacing with McAfee Associates VIRUSCAN(tm). Virus scan is available during compress and extract operations. Also available is a dedicated separate submenu with heads-up scan option selection. An activity/log function is available for virus scan functions. The user may keep track of VIRUSCAN(tm) operations, options used, dates/times performed, etc. ***** INSTALL THE ZIP TERMINUS(c): THE ZIP TERMINUS(c) operates most efficiently when used in conjunction with a hard drive. Floppy installation restricts the use of this program to just virus scan functions. PKZIP(tm) files needed are : PKZIP.EXE; PKUNZIP.EXE; ZIP2EXE.EXE; (v1.1 or v2.04g) McAfee VIRUSCAN files needed: SCAN.EXE version 9.14v102 ZIP TERMINUS files needed : ZT70B.EXE, ZTCF70.EXE; - PAGE 4 - HARD DRIVE: 1. Type the following lines pressing after each: c: cd\terminus zt70B.exe 4. Press F5 to configure when you arrive at the main menu. c: may be d: or a logical drive where you have placed the TERMINUS files. cd\terminus may be cd\utility or a subdirectory on the drive where you have placed the TERMINUS files. ------------------------------------------------------------ FLOPPY : 1. Format a blank data disk. 2. Copy The Zip TERMINUS and SCAN.EXE files to the disk. Put them in the ROOT DIR - not a subdirectory. 3. Place your disk in Drive #A. Type the following lines and press after each: a: cd\ zt70B.exe 4. Press F5 to configure when you arrive at the main menu. NOTE: Floppy installation allows only virus scan functions to be selected. Compress, Extract, Make SFX, Create/Restore M-V Zips and certain other program functions are not available if a floppy installation is detected. Use of a hard disk is required to gain full access. NOTE: You must press F5-PROGRAM SETUP when running The Zip Terminus for the first time or after moving it to a new dir. location, etc. The entries for default compress/extract source/target must be changed to suitable locations. Other items to change are the location of PKZIP, VIRUSCAN, screen saver ON/OFF, location of the scan activity log, etc. Floppy installation initializes the table in a different manner. - PAGE 5 - ***** CONFIGURE THE ZIP TERMINUS: THE ZIP TERMINUS(c) may be configured from the main program menu or a sub-menu while the program is running. It is highly recommended that you configure your paths and options when running the program for the first time. THE TERMINUS PRGMS DIR: Location of the ZIP TERMINUS files. (PKZIP 2.04x) This function is located in main menu selection #4. CREATE/RESTORE M-V ZIPs. Use it if you wish to store a whole subdirectory, multiple subdirectories or entire drives. This is a general(*.*) recursive operation with directory/path information storage. Switch option is available for non-recursive *.* compress. Set the ZIPUP source directory to the tree node where you wish the recursive compress with directory information inclusion to begin. Set the TARGET to a valid FLOPPY drive. You do not have to select individual files for your source. Next, press #1.CREATE M-V ZIPs. The Zip Terminus will stop and display a submenu just before the operation begins. User may select from different types of target disk format operations. Match up the correct format to the type of disk you are using. DOS verify and Virus Scan is also available. PKZIP will then be sent the -rP option along with the SOURCE starting location and the TARGET. Options entered into the ZIPUP ARCHIVE OPTION default table entry are included in this operation. Also placed on the command line is the -& span option with user requested format options if selected. Option is available for non-recursive compress. Press F7 and TEST the contents of the resulting ZIP file to make sure it contains the files which you intended to compress and that the files stored within the Zip pass the CRC integrity check. You may also wish to press F6-VIEW to observe the file names, sizes, dates and times, etc. of the files stored within the resultant Zip. A direct compare is not available. ** NOTE: Place options for hidden, system and read-only files, etc. into The Zip Terminus configuration table if you wish to archive files with those attributes. Other options may apply. -----> Read the PKZIP(tm) 2 User Guide NOW! for a more detailed description of the -& options, -rP option, etc. -----> Read your DOS manual for more information on directory tree structures, file attributes, etc. - PAGE 10- ***** UNZIP(extract) OPERATION: (FLAT ARCHIVES) The UNZIP SOURCE directory is displayed for UNZIP file selection. You may choose from those files with a 'ZIP' extension. If you need to perform file operations you should jump to DOS SESSION and then EXIT when finished. The EXTRACTED files will be placed in the UNZIP target directory. Use ALT-P to change locations. ***** NOTE: The files within an archive file should be extracted first and then virus scanned. Virus infectors may go undetected if you only scan the archive file itself. It is strongly suggested that you seek experienced help in dealing with computer virus infection. ***** INCLUDED PATH INFORMATION: (ADVANCED USER) Archives that have included path information should be extracted by pressing ALT-R while in the UNZIP menu. The ZIP TERMINUS specializes in 'FLAT ARCHIVES' but does allow extraction of DIR/PATH structure information. Set the UNZIP(extract) TARGET DIRECTORY to the location where restoration of stored dir/path structure will begin. If F8-VIRUS SCAN is ON, the target directory and the subdirectories connected to that node will be virus scanned.(/SUB) Always follow up with a manual virus scan(main menu selection #5). Zip Terminus 7.0B allows extraction from Zips containing path\ dir.structure information with the user option of specific or wild- card designated path/filename(s) without dir/path restoration. If you have previously pressed ALT-R a submenu will popup before extraction takes place. ***** RESTORE MULTI-VOLUME ZIPs: ----> ADVANCED USER! < REQUIRES PKZIP 2.04x > This version of The Zip Terminus allows extraction with directory/path structure restoration of multi-volume Zips. Select main menu #4. Then set the source and target directories by pressing ALT-P . The target directory is where directory/path restoration and file extraction will begin. Choose this location wisely. The SOURCE location must be a floppy. Next, select (#2. EXTRACT M-V ZIPs) to start restoration of files and included directory structure information. A submenu will next appear that will provide the user with several options. Zip Terminus 7.0B allows extraction from MULTI-VOLUME Zips with the user option of specific or wildcard designated path\filename(s) without dir/path restoration. If you have previously pressed F8-VIRUS SCAN to ON, the target directory and the subdirectories contained in that node will be virus scanned.(/SUB) If no directory structure information was found within the multi-volume Zip archive, then just the files will be extracted. Always follow up with a manual virus scan. - PAGE 11- ***** RESTORE MULTI-VOLUME ZIPs: Cont. Use The Zip Terminus default table(press F5-PROGRAM SETUP) to specify treatment of hidden, read-only, or system files and file attributes, etc. Modify the table entry named UNZIP ARCHIVE OPTIONS. Not all PKUNZIP options are compatible with this type of operation. Read the PKZIP(tm) 2 User Guide NOW! for a more detailed description of extraction options. ***** OVERFLOW Warning: ZT70B has a 512 file limit on ZIP file list functions. To ZIPUP or UNZIP more than 512 files press for *.* mode operation. ***** CREATE SELF-EXTRACTORS: (PKSFX --> MAKE EXE) This function will process a ZIP file chosen from the ZIPUP/UNZIP directories. The converted Zip file will be left in the selected directory. Use ALT-P to temporarily change the ZIPUP or UNZIP directory location if the current values are not acceptable. Check for virus infection by first using main menu #2. UNZIP - EXTRACT with F8-VIRUS SCAN in the ON position. Make sure the auto-scan options include /M /CHKHI so RAM memory will be checked. Read PKZIP(tm) 2 User Guide for information on PKSFX. ***** ZIP FILE COMMENTS: (-z) There is only one type of comment operation offered in this version of the ZIP TERMINUS. It is available in the ZIPUP, UNZIP submenus. Press ALT-C and first select a directory and then a Zip file to place a comment on. ***** TEST ZIPFILE(S): This option is available by pressing on the menu bar. It will verify files within Zips for checksum, etc. Use this option to test Zip files after they are created (including multi-volume ZIPs) or before they are extracted. Use this option if you have doubts about a ZIP file after modem transfer, a hard disk crash, etc. Version 7.0B will check a single Zip, or a list of ZIPs found in the chosen Directory. ***** PASSWORD PROTECTION:(ADVANCED USER MODE) Press to toggle password on or off. The password protect mode garbles each individual file in the master ZIP during the ZIPUP process. - PAGE 12 - The password may be changed by pressing and changing the password default parameter. Don't forget to save your changes when you are finished so that each time you run THE ZIP TERMINUS your first choice password will be loaded. PKZIP(tm) password protection is case sensitive so be aware that upper and lower case characters like 'Y' or 'y', are considered as being different. Choose a password of length 6 characters or more for best protection. CAUTION!: Remember your password when zipping up. It is not feasible to unzip files in a ZIP file that are password protected if you don't have the right password! ***** MEMORY AVAILABLE FUNCTION: Memory available for SESSION launch or PKZIP(tm) operations may be found by pressing CTRL-F key combination while in a MENU or CHANGE DEFAULTS. This is CONVENTIONAL RAM memory NOT FREE DISK SPACE! The number of FREE Kb displayed is the size of the largest CONTIGUOUS conventional block available. The RAM FREE figure displayed is only a guide to help users determine if their work programs and utilities will have enough space to operate. It does not necessarily refer to the total conventional memory(i.e. 640Kb, 512Kb, etc.) minus the sum of memory the programs you are running actually occupy. The number of KB FREE refers to the largest contiguous or adjacent set of RAM locations available and therefore, in a general sense, also refers to the size of the largest executable program that may be launched from the ZIP Terminus. (code, data, etc. within conventional RAM) CTRL-F under ZTEC70B operation displays the amount of conventional RAM free for PKZIP(tm) and VIRUSCAN(tm) operations. ***** DELETE WITHIN ZIP: Selective file delete WITHIN a FLAT archive. This program feature gives the user option to remove individual files from within the master FLAT archive.(FLAT ARCHIVES) ***** TAG FILE(s) FOR UNZIP(EXTRACT): Choice of which file(s) within a FLAT archive to extract. Rather than extract every file within an archive, the user may select individual or groups of files to extract.(FLAT ARCHIVES) - PAGE 13 - ***** VIRUS SCAN FILES: (F8 TOGGLES ON/OFF) You will need to have the location of McAfee's SCAN.EXE program clearly defined in the Default Table to utilize this function. The virus scan function is available in the ZIPUP and UNZIP menus. This function is turned on by pressing F8. EXE, COM and certain other file extension types(not Zips) selected to be placed into a ZIP file are virus scanned and the ZIPUP process will be aborted if a virus is detected. F8 toggles state from ON to OFF. EXE/COM files that are UNZIPPED are also scrutinized and checked for virus infection. It is strongly suggested that a manual virus scan, main menu #5, with memory check turned on should be used as a followup. Be aware that the files within an an archive file should be extracted first before checking for virus infectors. Virus scan of just a Zip file itself may not reveal infection. It is strongly suggested that you seek experienced help in dealing with computer virus infection. ***** VIRUS SCAN SUBMENU: Main menu select #5 activates the virus scan submenu. Here you may scan entire subdirectories or logical drives for virus infection using the McAfee Associates program SCAN.EXE . It is suggested that you should use the EXTRACT submenu with F8-VIRUS SCAN option ON! if you wish to check ZIP files for virus infection. /MANY is ignored during subdirectory scans. An ACTIVITY/LOG function is available which keeps track of scan options used, date/time of scan, whether a virus was detected, etc. Press F5-PROGRAM SETUP and then toggle the SCAN.EXE ACTIVITY/LOG option to ON. The ZIP Terminus does NOT directly support REMOVAL of computer virus infections. Use of a utility such as CLEAN-up (CLEAN.EXE) by McAfee Associates is required for removal operations. It is strongly suggested that you seek experienced help in dealing with computer virus infection. ***** POSSIBLE VIRUS FOUND! A visual/audible alarm is issued when possible virus is detected. You must enter the correct password to continue from this point. The password required is the same password used for ZIPUP/UNZIP garble operations. It may be user defined and entered into the default table. You will have no option at this point. You must enter the correct password to continue, then program operation will HALT with return to DOS, Windows, etc. DO NOT RESET YOUR MACHINE BY PRESSING THE HARDWARE RESET BUTTON. Shut your system down to prevent further spread of a possible computer virus. Please read the documentation that came with SCAN or CLEAN for more information on computer virus infections. REMINDER: The ZIP TERMINUS was NOT intended to be a CLEAN-up or computer virus DISINFECTION utility. IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED THAT YOU SEEK EXPERIENCED HELP IN DEALING WITH COMPUTER VIRUS INFECTIONS! - PAGE 14 - ***** VIRUS CHECK - PROGRAM FILES: This is a limited check for known virus infectors. RAM memory and the executables which reside in the Zip Terminus subdirectory are checked.SCAN.EXE performs its own self-test each time it is run. Certain other programs and/or groups are also checked for known virus infectors. IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED THAT YOU SEEK EXPERIENCED HELP IN DEALING WITH COMPUTER VIRUS INFECTIONS! ***** OPERATING FROM WINDOWS: A Windows Icon has been provided with The Zip Terminus v7.0b. The Zip Terminus is a DOS application and should be run as such. It is not recommended that you run this program from the DOS BOX. When you launch The Zip Terminus by use of 'icon click' make sure that the /UNATTEND option is enabled for virus scan functions. Check the ZTEC default table entry #12 and from main menu #5 make sure that the /UNATTEND switch has been turned on. ***** USING ALT-P TO CHANGE DIRECTORIES: All operation paths\directories are set to their default values as specified in the ZTEC configuration table when ZTEC is first run. As you move into each submenu the current operation directories will be refreshed with the default values. Using ALT-P to change a current operation directory will not in turn change the default value. After you leave the current submenu all operation directories will once again be refreshed to their default values. In other words, use of ALT-P only changes current operation directories on a temporary basis until you leave the current submenu. Also, changing a path while you are in the ZTEC configuration table submenu WILL NOT change the CURRENT PATH value until you return to the main menu. - PAGE 15 - ***** SCREEN SAVER : The screen saver is a program integrated function which blanks your computer screen after a pre-determined period of keyboard or mouse inactivity. The screen saver is turned on from the Default Table(press F5). Users may enter from 1 to 60 minutes of *approximate* delay time before the screen saver becomes active. This program feature will help to prevent screen burn due to prolonged static display. The screen saver responds to keypress AND mouse clicks. ***** VIRUS DETECTION ADDENDUM: DO NOT use the ZIP Terminus virus scan functions in an environment or on a machine where another virus disinfector utility is installed and running. This includes but is not limited to TSR virus utilities. No claim is made herein or otherwise as to compatibility with other author/program virus disinfector & detector utilities. ***** NOTE: The ZIP Terminus virus scan functions SHOULD NOT be used with other virus detection or disinfection software. This warning extends but is not limited to TSR type detectors. Use The ZIP Terminus in concert with the McAfee Associates anti-virus programs ONLY for best results. ***** ZIP TERMINUS START-UP OPTIONS: /S = Reduce possible "video snow" on older CGA displays /M = Eliminate window background colors.
