SYSOP'S TECHNICAL JOURNAL for TERRITORIES 3069 Documentation and program written by Jeffrey D. Hoffman Copyright (c) 1993,1994. Graphics: Copyright (c) 1994. All Rights Reserved. Forward For nearly three years, my name and my programs have been synonymous with fantasy role-playing. This should change everything. One of the most well-kept secrets in the TBBS industry, this software has been in developement since June, 1993. I unveiled a primitive (very primitive) predecessor of this software at BBSCON 1993. A message for those SYSOPs who had a chance to see this software during those few short days: "Sorry to keep you waiting." Now, over one year later, I am pleased to release a piece of entertainment software that is unlike anything you have ever experienced for TBBS ... Part I: Welcome to the 31st Century. TERRITORIES 3069 is a graphical, turn-based, strategy simulation. Players compete in a randomly-generated universe for control of everything. Using a simple menu structure, players control vast armadas of ships, each custom- designed with weapons, shields, and engines. Players begin in a tiny solar system somewhere within the huge universe and must explore, battle, and conquer the other solar systems (where other players lurk) in order to win the game. TERRITORIES 3069 uses RIPscrip to display its menu-driven interface. The graphics included are a mixture of hand-drawn images and 3D images created with Lightwave 3D. Part II: Special thanks. I would like to extend special thanks and gratitude to the beta-testing skills of Michael A. Weidler. Section I: Installation. Unlike other turn-based simulations for other BBS formats, installation of TERRITORIES 3069 is extremely easy. The following section explains, in detail, how to get TERRITORIES 3069 up and running on your system as fast as possible. Part I: Installing TERRITORIES 3069. This section will guide you through the process for getting TERRITORIES started on your system. This section is aimed at the initial installation. If you are already running TERRITORIES and are trying to restart the game because a player has won the game, see Part II. 1. Create a new directory for the TERRITORIES 3069 software within your TBBS directory. For example, use T3069. The complete path would be: C:\TBBS\T3069 2. Extract the TERRITORIES 3069 archive into this new directory. 3. Update your .SDL file by adding the following line to the menu on which you would like the users to be able to access the simulation. Entry: T -> TERRITORIES 3069 Priv=0 A1=-------- A2=-------- A3=-------- A4=-------- ANS=- IBM=- KEY=T TYPE=200 Opt Data=c:\tbbs\t3069\3069 /Q 4. (This step only applies to SYSOPs who have registered their copy of this software. The demonstration version does not include the BIGBANG.TPG program.) On another menu, reserved for either yourself or other co-SYSOPs, you need to add a menu item for the BIGBANG utility, which restarts a completed game. Add the following lines to that menu: Entry: B -> TERRITORIES 3069 : BIGBANG UTILITY Priv=255 A1=-------- A2=-------- A3=-------- A4=-------- ANS=- IBM=- KEY=B TYPE=200 Opt Data=c:\tbbs\t3069\bigbang /Q 5. Compile the .SDL file. 6. The TERRITORIES 3069 TURN PROCESSOR is designed to be run as a ghost task one or more times a day. This process, as explained above, will take all of the commands the players have issued to their ships and execute them. *NOTE* Without this ghost task, the game will not function. This program must run at least once a day, otherwise game-play will crawl. Using CEDIT, add the following ghost task to your system: Entry #, Occurs on Line 16 at 23:60 on Sun,Mon,Tue,Wed,Thu,Fri,Sat Type = 200 OptData = c:\tbbs\t3069\processr /Q A time of 23:60 causes this ghost task to be activated automatically when your BBS is run. (This assumes that your BBS shuts down every day for external events.) 7. Run your BBS. Part II: Restarting the TERRITORIES 3069 game. NOTE: This section only applies to SYSOPs who are using the registered version of TERRITORIES 3069. If you are running the demonstration version, simply re-extract the TERRITORIES archive into your directory, over-writing the databases with the original ones from the archive.) Once a player has destroyed all of the other players in the universe, the game will end with a screen which proudly displays the name of the winning race. Any player entering the game will see this message, and then will be returned to the BBS menu which calls TERRITORIES. This is the point at which you would restart the TERRITORIES 3069 universe. Run the BIGBANG utility. You will be presented with a menu which allows you to select the size of the universe you wish to create. The maximum number of players in a universe is 20, while the minimum is 10. Select size of the universe which meets the needs of the players on your system. If you would like to enter custom settings, you can also do so by following the on-screen instructions and entering values as they are requested by the software. Universe creation is a relatively quick process but it is extremely CPU intensive. I suggest that you do not generate a new universe during a peak-usage time on your system. Once the universe has been completed, the game will be open immediately to players. Section II: Registration Part I: The demo version versus the registered version The demonstration version of this software is designed to allow players to experience all aspects of TERRITORIES 3069. However, there are several features that can not be accessed in the unregistered version of this simulation. First, players can not create a race of their own in the demonstration version. The game is limited to exactly ten players, which are already set-up in the universe. In the registered version, players can begin a race of their own, starting from square one, where they must use strategy to plan mining operations and to launch attacks upon the other players. During a game played with registered software, players will discover that the scientists on their home planet will develop new engines, weapons, and shields for their ships. In the demonstration version, they have most of the technology already at their finger tips. However, the unregistered version will not allow the players to develop the hyper drive engine, the cloaking device, the disintegration cannon, or the phase missile. These powerful systems are reserved for registered game play. Finally, the demonstration version does not include the BIGBANG.TPG program. This utility is what you would use to restart the game when a player has won. BIGBANG randomly creates a universe filled with new planets, stars, and asteroids. (For more information on BIGBANG, see part II.) Part II: Registering TERRITORIES 3069 TERRITORIES 3069 is distributed by Safe Harbor Computers. You can order your registered copy of TERRITORIES by calling (800) 544-6599*. (Safe Harbor Computers is available Monday-Friday from 9:00am-8:00pm CST and Saturday from 9:00am-5:00pm CST.) Safe Harbor gladly accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. NOTE: The representatives that answer Safe Harbor's order line are simply order takers. They have no technical experience with this software. Contact Safe Harbor technical support for assistance with this software. If you would like to purchase this software with a check, I have included a file called REGISTER.TXT which will explain how to send your check or money order to Safe Harbor Computers. Upon registering your copy of TERRITORIES 3069, you will receive a 3.5" LOW DENSITY floppy disk via UPS within one-to-two business days. On this disk will be a registration keyfile and the BIGBANG software. Simply copy these two files into your TERRITORIES 3069 direction, modify your .SDL file, and begin a new game. NOTE: Upon installing your keyfile, you MUST begin restart the game. The registered software is designed to be started from scratch. Use the BIGBANG software to restart the game immediately. Part III: TERRITORIES 3069 Software Support You can contact the Safe Harbor Computers technical support line at (414) 548-8120. Their hours are the same as listed above. Technical support is provided to any registered TERRITORIES 3069 owner who has registered through Safe Harbor Computers. Jeffrey D. Hoffman provides a 24-hour-a-day multi-line support BBS service for registered product owners at (414) 548-8155. (Safe Harbor BBS - 300/1200/2400/9600/14400bps modem). I strongly encourage the use of this telecommunications system for error reporting and troubleshooting assistance. Since all software updates will be distributed first via the Safe Harbor BBS I recommend that all registered TERRITORIES licensees log onto the BBS at least once a month to receive the latest information about the simulation. At your first log-in, you must supply your full name and supply a password. At the main menu, register for full SYSOP access to gain access to the support SIG.
