Ron, N6VO, is now active from Tahiti as FO5VO. He prefers CW, so check the low end of the bands. He has been spotted on 14023 kHz around 0045z. QSL via N6VO. CHINA. George, KA3NRG, is in Beijing on business for the month of May. His free time is limited but he will try to operate the ususal SSB DX frequencies as time allows. QSL via K3WS. CRETE ISLAND. Julius, HA6NY, plans to be active on RTTY from May 24 to 31. Try 3582, 7038, 10185, 14085, 21085 and 28085 kHz. YEMEN. 3Y0PI operator Robert, N4GCK, has received permission to operate as 7O0CW. He could be active as early as July, though news reports indicate that Yemen has edged toward civil war, with heavy fighting around Aden. BHUTAN. Jim, VK9NS, has spoken with the Ministry of Communication of Bhutan and is awaiting permission to operate. Radio equipment and a beam antenna are already in place. He may operate from Bangladesh and Nepal enroute. UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. At the Dayton Hamvention, Don, WB2DND, said he will return to the UAE in October and operate again as A61AD. MARIANA ISLANDS. JA6VZB and JF6BCC will sign AH0T and KH2GR/KH0, respectively, from May 26 to 30. Plans are to operate 160 through 10 meters with CW, SSB and RTTY. They will participate in the WPX contest. UGANDA. Jim, 5X1B, will be QRT sometime in May. After a trip home he will head for Cameroon. ANTARCTICA. Due to budget cutbacks, the Vostok outpost, home of 4K1C, has been abandoned. The Vostok base holds the record for the coldest spot on earth, 129 below zero, reported on July 21, 1983. ARMED FORCES DAY. In a change for this year, all Armed Forces Day military stations will be on the air during the 24 hour period from 1300z May 21 until 1300z May 22. This will give amateurs an excellent chance to make cross band contacts with these stations. A list of the military stations that will be active, their call signs, frequencies, locations and modes they will be operating appears in May QST on page 136. PREFIX HUNTERS ALERT. CP94USA will be used by the La Paz Radio Club station CP1AA during May and June. From May 28 to July 28 Canadian amateurs may use the prefixes XK, XL, XO and VG. Nine Spanish stations will be signing EG as a prefix, 1 through 9 as a region designator, and ITU for the suffix, on ITU Day, May 17. PETER ONE QSLS. QSL Manager Jerry Branson, AA6BB/7 reports that over 90 per cent of 3Y0PI QSLing is now complete. They began on 2 May 1994 with the first group going in the mail on 9 May 1994. THIS WEEKEND ON THE RADIO. The ARRL Spring Sprints for 902, 1296 and 2304 MHz are separate sprints but will run concurrently from 6 AM to 1 PM local time. Volta RTTY DX Contest, sponsored by the Associazione Radioamatori Italiani is from 1200z May 14 until 1200z May 15 on 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters.
