IRTS News for 5th June 1994 CORK AREN GROUP --------------- Following a request to the Cork Radio Club in 1984 from Capt. B. Phelan, Chief Ambulance Officer with the Southern Health Board, an Amateur Radio Emergency Network was set up and formally constituted by the Dept. of Communications at that time. This followed the Air India disaster when the emergency services felt that they would benefit from the services of a group such as this. The local AREN group covers the entire Southern Health Board region. Both controllers of the group, John Ketch EI2GN and Finbar McCarthy EI9DCB, appear as contact for the group in the Major Accident Plan, which is updated every November, and a copy of which is held by each participating body in the region, including the Gardai, Fire and Ambulance services. Any who feel thay may have a contribution to make to this group should contact John at 021 29536 or Finbar at 021 304392. Whether or not an amateur licence is held is of no consequence as all help is appreciated. Members from the Kerry area are especially welcome. At present there are 21 members in the group and there is plenty of room for more volunteers. SAT CHAT -------- Aidan Murphy EI5HW reports that, owing to the overwhelming number of requests for the Sat Chat fact sheets, as listed in the May edition of the printed news, it will take at least 2 weeks to process all of the requests. Any person seeking more than 3 fact sheets at a time is asked to increment the return postage and size of return envelope accordingly. DONEGAL (TIR CONAILL) ARS ------------------------- At the monthly meeting held in May, the society discussed the Donegal digipeater. Most of the equipoment is now available to the packet radio group, and the installation of the digipeater on site is now imminent. Funding was appropriately voted to the project. The Arranmore Island Dxpedition began on Friday, and a large group is operating between the 2 stations. EJ5TCR will be on air until Bank holiday Monday evening, on all HF bands, using CW and phone. Anyone within easy reach of Sligo, who may be interested in AREN should contact Brendan Rooney EI7CS at QTHr. It may be possible to form an AREN group in the area if there is sufficient interest. NORTH DUBLIN ARC ---------------- The AGM of NDR was held on 28 May. Acting chairman, Ray McCabe EI7AHB, welcomed all those present and reiterated the club's commitment to 3 types of radio amateur: those involved in operation/QSO activities, those involved with project work and those who want to belong to the radio fraternity. Ray went on to comment that each of these groups has a significant contribution to make to the ongoing success of NDR. The following committee were elected: Chairman Ray McCabe, Secretary Philip Murphy EI8HN, Treaurer Liam Hughes EI8HY, Projects Manager Tony Fay EI6DQB, TVI Manager John Ryan EI6DG, Station Manager Bill Ryan EI8BC, P.R.O. and IRTS Rep. Aidan Murphy EI5HW. Further information about NDR may be had from Philip or Aidan. CORK RADIO EXAMS ---------------- We extend best wishes to the students from both Cork ARC and E.
