IRTS RADIO NEWS BULLETIN - Sunday  26th June 1994

This news bulletin was compiled and edited by Steve Wright,
EI5DD, in conjunction with the members of the Galway VHF Group.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS MORSE TESTS.

Some members have reported difficulty in arranging Morse Tests
with the Department of Communications. Following representations
from the IRTS the Department of Communications has now agreed to
schedule as many tests as possible in the first two weeks of
July. If anyone is interested in taking the Morse Test around
that time, telephone the Department on the 5th of July or as
near as possible thereafter and ask Mr Gerry Mulville to give
you a time to attend. The telephone number of the department is
01- 6785444 and the address is the Department of the Marine,
Leeson Lane, Dublin 2.

IRTS NEWS ON INTERNET.

For the past few months the IRTS radio news has been distributed
to a mailing list on the Internet by Sean EI 941 and Colm
EI2EDB. At the moment they are looking for somebody to help out
for the summer months. Ideally the person must have access to
both the packet network and the Internet. If anyone would be
willing to help contact Colm EI2EDB via packet eg EI2EDB @
EI7GM. Regrettably Sean's Internet address was illegible on the
fax sheet perhaps we will be able to rectify that on a future
bulletin.

G0LUQ's  TRAVELS AROUND EI.

Terry, G0LUQ has been travelling around EI for the last
fortnight activating rare counties and also, when and where
possible, has been taking the opportunity to operate from
islands for the benefit of IOTA hunters throughout the world.
Much of Terry's HF activities were possible via a long wire
antenna slung up into the nearest tree. In places that were
devoid of trees on the West Coast, the antenna was held aloft
using a box kite. We look forward to meeting Terry again on his
future trips to EI. Terry is often heard calling into the IRTS
News on 40 metres and participating in the net held slightly HF
of the News on Sunday mornings.   

CORK RADIO CLUB.

At the last meeting of the Cork Radio Club, there was a showing
of the video covering the operation of Amateur Satellites. The
majority of the members agreed that the equipment used to
participate in the satellite communications seemed to be very
expensive and it was decided that the club might experiment with
the use of the Oscar satellite using VHF and UHF up and
downlinks. 

More video lectures are on the cards for future meetings and VHF
NFD was discussed at length. The organisation of Cork  Rally is
progressing well with some impressive traders having booked
tables. Preliminary discussion reveals that there will be such a
large attendance of all facets of the Radio and Electronics
World that it may be necessary for the Traders to take over the
bar as well. Over the years of running this rally the attendance
has increased and Cork Radio Club are looking forward to an even
bigger turnout this year. This is definitely a date to be placed
in the diary.   

IOTA CONTEST.

A new contest on the calendar, run for the first time last year,
is the Islands on the Air contest. There is a guarantee of
plenty of activity from EI and rumours suggest that many of the
more popular islands are already booked. Look out for activity
from Dalkey Island, the Saltees, Aran Islands and the Blaskets
over the last weekend of July. The Dalkey Island Contest Group
look forward to another opportunity to enter this contest
following their placing 2nd in the world in last years contest.  

GALWAY RALLY.

The Galway Radio Experimenters Club will be holding their Rally
on Sunday  the 10th of July at the Convent of Mercy,
Newtownsmith, Galway with doors opening at 12 noon. There is
plenty of parking space available. There are plenty of local
activities to keep the family amused. Enquiries may be directed

NEWS ITEMS URGENTLY REQUESTED.

Once again it cannot be stressed more strongly that there is an
urgent requirement for items of news from Clubs and Societies
around the country. Whilst there is a regular input from two or
three groups there are many  more who are regularly active. Club
activities, field days, parties, experiments, projects, classes,
exhibitions, scandals and so much more are all of interest to
the Editors of the Printed and Radio News Services. 

Without an input from members of the fraternity it is impossible
to keep these services going to the required deadlines. Worse
still it would be terrible to hear a regular script stating that
items of interest may be sent to ....... and no other content!!!
