These stories and an update on the condition of ARRL President George Wilson, W4OYI come your way right now! (***** SAREX - STS-67 STS-67 is the next space shuttle flight to carry SAREX, the shuttle amateur radio experiment and it's a mission that carries more scheduled ham radio contacts than any of the 16 SAREX missions that have gone before. It's the longest space shuttle flight ever scheduled, 16 days, and six of the astronauts on board are licensed ham radio operators. One of them, WA4SIR, Ron Parise is flying on his second mission! The space ship Endeavour flies more than 200 miles above the earth for this flight. Its primary payload will be ASTRO 2 for measuring planets, stars and galaxies in space. There are 26 scheduled school contacts, and that's another record. Only 29 schools made contact for the whole of last year! Most of the schools are stateside but the list also includes South Africa, Bangalore, India, and Cobram, Australia. The crew also plans some random contacts with earth bound hams, both voice and packet. Listen for them on 145.55 Mhz. That's the downlink frequency for voice or packet. The astronauts will NOT listen on that frequency however. Call them on voice on 144.91, 144.93, 144.95, 144.97 and 144.99 Mhz. Packet uplink is 144.99. For information on when and where to listen we suggest you check transmissions from the Goddard Space Flight Center on 3.86 Mhz, 7.185 Mhz, or 14.290 Mhz. You'll not only get in-flight bulletins but all the air to ground conversations as well. Good luck in trying to make contact. We also have another SAREX report on a changing of the guard in Houston. The SAREX Principal Investigator for the last ten years has been Lou McFadin, W5DID. Lou's leaving NASA to go to work for AMSAT, putting together the Phase 3D Satellite. His place at Mission Control in Houston will be taken by Matt Bordelon, KC5BTL. Matt's very well qualified. He's a training officer teaching astronauts how to handle SAREX. Now he'll an active participant, one of the four member SAREX Working Group that runs the program for the American Radio Relay League and AMSAT. Our best wishes to Lou McFadin, W5DID on his career move to the AMSAT Phase 3D project. We will have more on STS-67 and SAREX next week. (***** AMSAT PICKS FREQUENCIES FOR PHASE 3D SATELLITE AMSAT has selected final frequencies for its advanced Phase 3D satellite, due to launch in 1996. The selections, approved by Phase 3D Project Leader Dr. Karl Meinzer, DJ4ZC, were carefully chosen to minimize mutual interference with other amateur satellites and were coordinated with IARU band plans. According to AMSAT Executive Vice President Keith Baker, KB1SF, the bands to be used by the upcoming satellite include 21 and 28 MHz on HF with 145 MHz on VHF and 436, 1269, 2400, 5668, 10451, and 24048 MHz on UHF. (***** ZC6B UPDATE An ongoing ham radio DX operation using a defunct call sign from a land that technically does not exist is still grabbing the attention of DXers world wide. The call sign is ZC6B and the place is Palestine. Both exist only in the minds of the people who remember the days following World War 2. Another update on the controversial ham radio operation from Palestine. Dr. Sami Terazi, signing ZC6B continues to be active most days on 14.243 MHz at 14:00 UTC. Dr. Tarazi who claims to be operating from Gaza says that he will soon be installing a 3 element beam. He has also states that he has not received any mail from either the USA or Europe because it takes a month or more to receive any. ZC6A claims that he has mailed some QSL cards direct by using the callbook and notes that cards for him from the United States cards can now be sent to Dr. Sami Tarazi, c/o 7162 E. Kendall Drive, E. Syracuse, NY 13057. The original QSL route was Dr. Sami Tarazi, Box 1008, Gaza, Palestine via Israel. Meanwhile, there are other rumors floating around stating a couple of DXpeditions will take place in March by some JA, European and stateside operators. Also a reminder that the ZC6 prefix was deleted from the DXCC Countries List as of July 1st of 1968. The allocation list of international call signs now shows that the prefix for ZC6 is allocated to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and not to Gaza or Palestine. (***** MURDER The search for a Georgia amateur radio operator's missing granddaughter is over. You may recall an earlier Newsline report about Chanty Shiverdecker. She's the 15 year old Alexander City, Alabama, high school student who disappeared December 9th, 1994. On February 24th, nearly 11 weeks after she was reported missing, Chanty's body was found in a ditch about 8 miles from home. Police have no suspects in Chanty's murder. Chanty Shiverdecker was the granddaughter of Milton Landin, WB1CRP, of Forsythe, Georgia. (***** GEORGE WILSON UPDATE ARRL President George Wilson, W4OYI, who suffered a stroke on February 11th is showing considerable improvement. As get well wishes pour in, so do questions pertaining to exactly what happened to the very popular League president. ARRL Executive Vice President Dave Sumner, K1ZZ says that it was a fairly serious stroke. "What occurred is a, what is called an intercerebral hemorrhage on the right side of his brain. In other words, there was bleeding tissue deep inside the brain. This has affected, to some extent his control of the left side of his body. But it appears whatever permanent damage that may have been done is physical to the left side of his body. He may have some paralysis there that will require some rehabilitation. Of course for someone like George, his mind is, as sharp as it is, that's the thing you worry about the most. The doctors are quite optimistic that there's been no permanent damage there." Dave adds that George's wife Marian and their two children deeply appreciate the expressions of support that have come from radio amateurs throughout the world. Get well cards may be sent to President Wilson in care of ARRL Headquarters, 225 Main Street, Newington, CT 06111. You can also post your get well wishes to George on the America Online Ham Radio BBS from where they will be forwarded to W4OYI. (***** MO. LICENSE PLATE FEES Some good news for hams living in Missouri. ARRL Midwest Division Director Lew Gordon, K4VX reports that through the efforts of Ed Schneider, N0IUO and others, Representative Hand of the Missouri House of Representatives has introduced a bill which would reduce the fee for personalized Amateur call plates. This, to an initial fee of only $15 with an annual renewal fee of $3. All Missouri Amateurs are urged to contact their local state representative and solicit support for this bill. Missouri is one of very few states that places Amateur Radio license plates in the same category as vanity plates. (***** TEENAGE HACKER Another young hacker is in the news. GM4NRB reports via a worldwide packet radio posting that a British teenager who allegedly infiltrated into sensitive U.S. government computers is in jail. The youth who may have been a UK ham is said to have illegally monitored top secret communications over the North Korean nuclear crisis last spring. According to quotes from the London Daily Independent newspaper, the 16 year old boy tapped into several defense computers for seven months during the crisis. After reading the messages the teen reportedly posted them on to the Internet where a British computer buff who read them told the Independent they contained information about missile firing sites in North Korea and field intelligence. The young computer criminal, nicknamed "Datastream" by other Internet users, was finally caught by investigators after he left his terminal on-line to a U.S. defense computer overnight. British police arrested the boy in July. In a statement to the paper, the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations acknowledged the hacker could have accessed and read the top secret Korean files. (***** DIGITAL PLANS The 14th annual ARRL Digital Communications Conference will be held September 8th - 10th at the LaQuinta Conference Center in Arlington, Texas, near Dallas. The ARRL Digital Communications Conference is an international forum for radio amateurs and experts in digital communication, networking, and related technologies, at which they can meet, publish their work, and present new ideas and techniques for discussion. Presenters and attendees can exchange ideas and learn about recent hardware and software advances, theories, experimental results, and practical applications. Anyone interested in digital communication is invited to submit a paper for publication in the Conference Proceedings. Attendance at the conference is not required for publication. Papers are due by July 21st, 1995, and should be submitted to Maty Weinberg, at ARRL Headquarters. (***** NASA PRESS RELEASES NASA press releases and other information are available automatically by sending an Internet electronic mail message to domo@hq.nasa.gov. In the body of the message users should type the words subscribe press-release. If you did it right, the system will reply with a confirmation via E-mail of each subscription. A second automatic message will include additional information on the service. Questions should be directed to NASA at area code (202) 358-4043. (***** HISTORICAL ASSISTANCE The Antique Wireless Association is building a replica of the famous 1BCG transmitter used in the 1921 ARRL Transatlantic Tests. This was the first station to send a complete message across the Atlantic. 1BCG was operated from East Greenwich, Connecticut, by members of the pioneering Radio Club of America. The association says that it knows of only one licensed amateur other than 1BCG himself who still active who was heard by Paul Godley in England. That's Jim Russell, now W8BU, then 8BU. The association would like to hear from other amateurs who might have heard 1BCG during the tests. If you can help, contact AWA Curator Bruce Kelley, W2ICE, 59 Main Street, Bloomfield, New York 14469. The Antique Wireless Association hopes to have the transmitter operating sometime this fall. It also hopes its operators are able to work some of the hams who participated in the 1921 tests. (***** ZS5AKV HONORED Southern Africa Radio League President Hans van de Groenendaal ZS5AKV has been awarded an honorary Master of Engineering degree from the University of Stellenbosch. The graduation ceremony was held at the University last December 15th. In his speech, the Rector, Prof. A. H. van Wyk, paid tribute to Hans for his contribution to Amateur Radio and to the Amateur Radio Satellite Service. (***** DX In DX look for Zimbabwe on the WARC bands. Bill Taylor, Z21CS, can be found most days on 18.124 MHz around 17:15z. The interesting thing when QSLing to Bill is he does not want any IRCs or green stamps. Rather, he would like a packet of flower seeds for his wife! QSL to: Bill Taylor, Box 264, Kwekwe, Zimbabwe. (***** TWIAR CELEBRATES #100 Finally, a belated Happy Birthday to our good friends at This Week in Amateur Radio. The satellite-delivered ham radio news and information service celebrated its 2nd Anniversary on Saturday, February 25th. This Week in Amateur Radio was originally known as Amateur Radio Weekly and carried on the Spacenet III satellite from southern California. In early 1993, production was moved to central New York and the show was renamed "This Week in Amateur Radio". In March of that year it was taken over by the current production group and went on the air with a new, expanded format from Albany. The show went on a four-week hiatus during December 1993 during its transition to Galaxy III and the new "Omega Radio Network". Omega is a service provider that features communications hobby programming. "Omega" and "This Week" moved to AT&T's Telstar 302 earlier this month. This Week In Amateur Radio is produced by Community Video Associates and is heard on nearly a 100 amateur repeaters throughout the United States and Canada. Our congratulations to Steven Anderman, WA3RKB and George Bowen, N2LQS and the rest of the gang at This Week in Amateur Radio on edition number 100 and for making their own dream of service to the ham radio community, come true!
